According to Games Radar+, when Florence Pugh opened up about Princess Irulan, she said:
“It’s funny, I was asked this morning, ‘Is she like any of the other feisty characters that I’ve played before? Whilst she may be internally, I think she’s probably one of the quietest characters I’ve ever played.”
From playing Yelena Belova in Black Widow to slaying the role of Saraya in Fighting With My Family, Pugh has been majorly associated with energetic and loud characters. However, her latest portrayal in Dune 2 is less fiery and mysterious. The calculated demeanor of Princess Irulan makes her personality the polar opposite of the ones Pugh has previously played. The Little Woman star added:
“She is someone that is constantly listening, and always learning, and that was something that I was so excited [about] when I was reading the script.”
Florence Pugh says Princess Irulan is “calculated” and is always aware and strategic. These unique qualities intrigued Pugh, and she also mentioned that viewers will gradually understand the mysterious nature of the Princess. Apart from Paul’s journey, Dune 2 will also revolve around the loyalties, wisdom, and abilities of Princess Irulan, as she’s a prominent figure in the Dune Universe.

While speaking to Screen Rant, Pugh explained that not much has been changed about her character, but the insights provided in the upcoming film will be relatively less. She said:
“I think that she’s allowed to grow, which is a wonderful thing. I like how, in this movie, we don’t get all of her.”
Even though Dune 2 will mostly align with Princess Irulan from the books, the difference lies in the depth of her character. But gradually viewers will understand the uniqueness of Pugh’s role, allowing more growth and mystery to the character.
Dune 2 releases on March 1, 2024.
