Grant Gustin just recently hung his red suit from playing the titular character on CW’s The Flash as the show came to an end this May. After starring as Barry Allen for nine years, Gustin’s attempt at branching out has been met with some strong opinions.

On one hand, fans are upset with Ezra Miller’s performance as the Flash and want Gustin to replace him. On the other hand, his first non-superhero project, Freevee’s rom-com Puppy Love has received really harsh reviews from the critics.

Grant Gustin‘s Puppy Love did not adore its way into critics’ hearts. The rom-com did not deliver either of the things its genre promises. With the tried and tested premise of dogs acting as matchmakers, the film had potential. But it failed to deliver. The reviews have been anything but nice.

Gustin plays Max Stevenson, an awkward germophobe whose therapist suggests he get a dog to help with his social anxiety and get him to make some friends. Max gets a dog named Chloe who softens him. Starring opposite Gustin is Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale. She plays Nicole who has given up on romance and dating. Nicole’s dog Channing Tatum causes Chloe to get pregnant, leaving the owners no choice but to co-parent the litter. Their dogs’ love story causes the pair to fall in love.

There were opportunities where the film could have been saved but none were taken. It received a 30% rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Gustin’s stellar acting could not make up for a script lacking depth.

Grant Gustin’s popularity as The Flash is on a high level. He has played the superhero for almost a decade. Fans have loved him for so long that his popularity heavily affected Ezra Miller’s casting as the hero in DC’s movie adaptation. Many people of high rank who are big fans of the comic have vocalized their agreement of the same.

Word is that DC is actually considering recasting of Barry Allen. Nothing has been confirmed from the studio yet. And would Gustin even want to return to the character can’t be said. Everything is in the air at the moment. Will Grant Gustin be seen donning The Flash’s costume again, can be said.

In the meantime, Puppy Love is now available for streaming on Amazon Freevee.
