“He was crying more than I was”: Game of Thrones Star Emilia Clarke Was Terrified and Cried Before Shooting S*x Scenes With Jason Momoa
Game of Thrones was a phenomenon. The show won the interest of a whole generation of viewers. The stars who featured in the show became household names. And one of them, perhaps the one to have got the most out of starring in it, is Emilia Clarke.
Playing the role of Daenerys Targaryen AKA the Mother of Dragons, she was one of the most celebrated faces in television history. But the role also had its cons. It was after joining the fantasy drama that she found out one lacuna with her character – she would have to perform a lot of nude scenes.
Emilia Clarke didn’t know a major part about her role
Emilia Clarke had just gotten out of drama school. And that is when she landed the role of Daenerys Targaryen in the Game of Thrones. And it was an opportunity that she was not willing to pass. In retrospect, she did make the right decision. The show was bound to make it big. Letting the opportunity go would have been a grave mistake.
She took the role, and the rest, as we say, is history. But it was when the script came that she found what the catch was. She would have to go nude in the course of the shoot, many times that is. That is something she had no idea about.
Emilia Clarke shares her experience of being nude on set
Reflecting on what she was going through back then, the Me Before You star opened up about the whole situation in an interview on the Armchair Expert in 2019. She said,
“I took the job and then they sent me the scripts and I was reading them, and I was like, ‘Oh, there’s the catch!’”
But she revealed that it was not a very big concern for her. She said,
“But I’d come fresh from drama school and I approached it as a job: if it’s in the script then it’s clearly needed.” But all that was indeed too much for her. She recollected, “I’ve never been on a film set like this before and I’m now on a film set completely naked with all of these people, and I don’t know what I’m meant to do, and I don’t know what’s expected of me, and I don’t know what you want, and I don’t know what I want.”
She was terrified out of her wits.
Jason Momoa was very considerate while shooting the intimate scenes
Filming those scenes with Jason Momoa was not easy on the 36-year-old. But it was the Aquaman star who made her feel better. She was all praise for him for making her feel comfortable in her skin, while Clarke felt the ‘impostor syndrome’. She said, “He was crying more than I was.”
She continued,
“It’s only now that I realise how fortunate I was with that, because that could have gone many, many, many different ways. He was always like, ‘Can we get her a f****ng robe? She’s shivering!’ He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being.”
Maybe the Khal wasn’t as stoic as he always seemed.
