The former couple met in 1987 and got married two years after dating each other. They were one of the A-list couples at the time however it broke once Helena Bonham Carter entered into their life. In last year’s interview with New Yorker, she addressed her former husband’s affair stating,
“I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set,” adding, “What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”
She continued,
“I was half alive. Any sense of being a lovable or worthy person had gone completely.”
Even though the heartbreak was more than enough for her to handle, she “made peace” with Carter. Due to her first split with Branagh, she went through severe depression. It surely took a long time to finally cope with her bad mental health.
