PEOPLE obtained a coroner’s report on the Gangsta’s Paradise rapper, which identified unspecified cardiomyopathy, asthma, and recent phencyclidine usage as key illnesses that contributed to his death. According to the Cleveland Clinic, cardiomyopathy is a condition that affects the heart muscle, causing it to stiffen, expand, or thicken, making it harder for the heart to adequately pump blood to the rest of the body. Phencyclidine, popularly known as PCP, is a hallucinogenic street drug.

Coolio’s longtime spokeswoman told TMZ that the late artist went to the toilet at a friend’s residence. When he didn’t come out, his friend yelled out to him, but he didn’t respond. They then discovered Coolio, real name Artis Leon Ivey Jr., on the floor. According to the publication, the friend called for aid, and when responders came, Coolio was declared dead.

Since the news, Weird Al Yankovic, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Kenan Thompson, Questlove, and others have paid respect to him on social media. Michelle Pfeiffer, who featured in Coolio’s music video for Gangsta’s Paradise, the main song from the 1995 film’s soundtrack, was among the first to express her condolences.
