Without a doubt, the Star Wars film series is one of the most beloved of all time, so whenever a new spin-off series or movie is announced, fans have eagerly anticipated it with the same enthusiasm every time. One such series that is based on the persona of Lando Calrissian played by Donald Glover; is Lando, which was marketed as Star Wars: Lando. 

Billy Dee Williams, who later returned to reprise the role in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, first appeared as Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back, a Star Wars film from the 1980s. When Solo: A Star Wars Story was being made in 2018, actor Donald Glover was cast to play the part who was going to play the lead in Star Wars: Lando as well. But now there is an update from the writer of the show which is going to turn Star Wars fans disappointed.

Justin Simien has no idea what is going on with Donald Glover starring Lando 

Director-writer Justin Simien, who was excited to bring the character of Lando Calrissian alive on-screen for the audience about recently shared with The Direct that he has no update about the show.

He said, “I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show. It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on with it.”

Back in 2020, the only update about the show that was given to the audience was by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who noted that the series was very much happening and actor Donald Glover was reprising his character. It was also noted that the actor was very excited to be back as Lando.

Who was Lando Calrissian?

The character of Lando Calrissian was introduced as a friend of Han Solo and the administrator of the floating Cloud City on the gas planet Bespin. Before this, the character was known to be a gambler, con artist, playboy, mining engineer, and businessman who was the owner of the Millennium Falcon until he lost everything to Solo in a bet.

The character who was initially portrayed on screen by Billy Dee Williams was introduced in The Empire Strikes Back in 1983 when Cloud City was threatened by the Galactic Empire and he betrays Han Solo to Darth Vader but manages to redeem himself after he helps Solo’s friends to escape.

Lando over the years became one of the most popular and liked characters in the Star Wars franchise, with Williams receiving love and appreciation for portraying him so wonderfully on-screen. Late in 2018, Community actor Donald Glover took over the role and was similarly praised by the audience and the critics for his portrayal.

Kennedy, when announcing the series in 2020 had shared, “Lando Calrissian is the galaxy’s smoothest, most notorious scoundrel, and he’ll return in a brand-new event series for Disney+. A massive Star Wars fan himself, Justin Simien has put together a reel to give you a sense of the style, tone, and irresistible swagger of our upcoming series, Lando.”

Since the announcement of the show happening, fans have been excited to see the story of Lando unfold on-screen with it set to premiere on Disney+, but the recent disappointing update has made fans question if the show would ever happen.

When Glover was asked about his role, he said, “I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him. It just has to be the right, it just needs to be the right way to do it.” He also added that time is precious and he is not interested in doing anything that’s just going to be a waste of his time or just a paycheck.

The actor lastly added that if the story is right, he would do it, adding that the character of Lando feels like outside of the Star Wars universe, but still in it it is why he feels that the audience likes him. He’s the most elastic of the characters because you don’t know where he is from or who he is or whatever.
