“I really thought you were talking about Mascara”: Amber Heard Ally Julia Fox Apologizes To Save Face After Being Blasted Online for Supporting S*xual Assault
Amber Heard’s ally Julia Fox, who supported her via Instagram posts during her defamation case trial with her ex-husband Johnny Depp, landed into hot water after the ‘TikTok Mascara’ misunderstanding. However, after knowing the actual meaning of ‘Mascara’ on TikTok, she apologized for her comment immediately.
The Italian-American actress gained fame for her role in the 2019 film Uncut Gems, which grabbed her nomination at Gotham Awards 2019. The actress drew much attention when she stood up for Amber Heard during her trial because she was allegedly compelled to support her. In the interview with Emily Ratajkowski on her podcast, the Uncut Gems star explained the reason for supporting the Aquaman actress was “none of us are safe” regarding women in Hollywood. Despite this, she recently made headlines after she began dating famous rapper Kanye West, but she split after six weeks due to the rapper’s anti-Jewish comments.
Julia Fox Apologizes After Getting Slammed For Misunderstanding TikTok Mascara Trend
The Italian-American actress Julia Fox apologized in a TikTok story on January 27 for not being aware of the term ‘Mascara’ on the platform. As soon as you hear the word mascara, you will certainly think it is a cosmetic product, but it’s not the same on TikTok.
A man posted a TikTok on January 23, and in the on-screen text, he wrote,
“I gave this one girl mascara one time, and it must’ve been so good that she decided that she and her friend should both try it without my consent.”
Fox commented on that post,
“Idk why but I don’t feel bad for u, lol.”
Considering that Fox was unaware of the word ‘Mascara’ on TikTok, she was getting slammed for her comment on that post. However, as part of TikTok content moderation, users are using ‘Mascara’ for s*x or s*xual assault on the platform, not to be banned.
Fox wrote in her TikTok story to clarify it,
“I commented on a video because I thought this guy was talking about getting his mascara stolen by some girl, and then the girl lent it to her friend. And, as I read it, it just seemed so dramatic in the video, and I was like, damn, don’t catch a case — it’s just mascara. But it was, in fact, not just mascara. I’m really sorry, I’m really showing my age right now.”
In the opinion of the critics, Fox’s stance on men as victims of s*xual abuse was flippant, and the users roasted her in the comment section.
The Uncut Gems Star Gets Support On Twitter
There has been much talk on TikTok about mascara lately; no, it’s not about makeup. Aside from the TikTok videos on beauty and makeup tutorials, the “mascara trend” isn’t precisely about mascara in the conventional sense. The ‘Mascara’ is the coded way to talk about s*x on the platform, and many users use that word to share their or others’ s*xual assault experiences. In the case of American actress Julia Fox, she became the victim of not knowing about the term on TikTok and received plenty of reactions from users on both TikTok and Twitter.
A Twitter handle, Pop Crave, tweeted about the incident, which reads,
“Julia Fox apologizes to TikTok user after being accused of ‘condoning s*xual assault’ for a comment she made about his ‘mascara’ story: Hey babe I’m so sorry I really thought u were talking about mascara like as in makeup.”

There was much attention drawn to the tweet for not only the fact that Julia Fox was unaware of the use of the term on TikTok but also that many fans were unaware.

See? People who aren’t online 24/7 don’t know. I don’t know why people think she knew. I highly doubt she’d actually condone sexual assault

Caused even more confusion the other day when an actual mascara scandal went down!

But for them to really think mascara is a universal word for sexual assault is crazy. And the first thing they do is not let her in on the code word but claim she condones sexual assault? I guarantee you they are no older than 23yo. pic.twitter.com/0Xx9W4UYw8

As a result, the actress got slammed by the TikTok community for misunderstanding the codes, but she got plenty of support from Twitter users, as many fans were also unaware of these bizarre terms on TikTok.
