“I tried to self-sabotage that piece of myself”: Kevin Bacon Has Hostile Feelings Towards Fame after Footloose Turned Him into an Icon
Kevin Bacon has starred in movies of various genres in his career spanning more than four decades. From horror movies such as Friday the 13th and Tremors to rom-com movies such as Crazy, Stupid, Love, he has done it all. Although he has never been nominated for an Academy Award despite his brilliant acting skills, he has won other accolades such as a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild award.
Kevin Bacon’s breakthrough in Hollywood came in the leading role in the 1984 musical drama Footloose. The movie garnered great acclaim which established the actor as a teen idol. Bacon, however, had a surprising reaction given how a lot of rising actors strive for that kind of fame.
Kevin Bacon Had An Amusing Reaction To Fame
Kevin Bacon is doubtlessly one of the best actors in Hollywood and like any other artist, he wanted to be known for his talents and work with great directors. Footloose‘s success might have established his name as an icon but that was certainly not what he wished for.
In an interview on the Podcrushed podcast, Bacon revealed his true feelings about the attention he received because of Footloose. He said:
“I had already moved into, ‘I want to be Dustin Hoffman or Meryl or John Cazale or De Niro. I want to work with Scorsese. I want to do Chekhov.’ You know what I mean? I was so into what my idea of a serious actor was, and all of a sudden, I was given this thing that was completely not a serious actor. So I rejected it, full-on on. I tried to self-sabotage that piece of myself and my popularity.”

The JFK star’s point of view about this whole thing is fair. He said that the last thing he wanted to be at that point in time was a popstar because according to him, that would tarnish his image as a serious actor which might stunt his growth altogether.
Kevin Bacon Was Not Aware That Footloose Was A Dance Movie
“When I did the dance movie, I was not a dancer. I wasn’t trained as a dancer. If I’m being honest, I didn’t even really understand that it was a dance movie. I thought it was just a movie, and then, where they would indicate that there was dancing, I would just get up.”
