“I’m sure there’s a jet waiting”: Glen Powell Breaks Silence on Top Gun 3 Secret as Tom Cruise Gears Up for Sequel
Top Gun 3 is one of the most highly anticipated movies of recent times. The American action drama multimedia franchise, Top Gun, started its journey based on the 1983 article Top Guns by Ehud Yonay. The first movie came out in 1986, becoming an instant cultural phenomenon that even went on to boost Navy recruitment despite getting a mixed bag of reviews.
The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, came in 2022, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it took a gamble on theatrical release. Maverick succeeded not only commercially but critically as well, grossing $1.4 billion at the box office and being nominated for six awards at the 95th Academy Awards (including Best Picture), winning Best Sound, and receiving numerous other accolades.
It is doing the rounds on the internet that a third Top Gun movie is on the horizon. Recently, Hangman actor Glen Powell broke the silence around the much-anticipated third Top Gun movie and teased some information.
Maverick Star Glen Powell Confirms Top Gun 3 At The Sundance Festival
Glen Powell, who plays the megalomaniac Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick and essentially saves Pete Mitchell and Rooster’s lives at the conclusion of the film, teases a return of the magnificent trio in a potential Top Gun 3 movie. CNN reported earlier in January via reliable sources that a third movie is in the works at Paramount and according to the source, the movie is in “very early stages of development.”
The source also mentioned that although there is no script for Top Gun 3 yet, it is working on an early draft that is being developed by Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger. Glen Powell, stopped by Variety while at the Sundance Festival for his film Anyone But You, teased information about Top Gun 3. While he himself does not seem to know much about anything yet, he does give hope that there is going to be some “fun stuff” announced soon.
“People looked at me like I knew what was going on. There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”
The character of Hangman is reminiscent of Val Kilmer’s Iceman from the original Top Gun. However, despite his gargantuan ego, he disobeys the orders to save his teammates Mitchell and Rooster, becoming a fan favorite almost instantly. Fans are rejoicing at the news that Glen Powell’s character will make a comeback again in Top Gun 3.
How Does Top Gun 3 Fit Into Tom Cruise’s Upcoming Schedule?
In light of his deal with Warner Bros., many were wondering how Top Gun 3 would manage to materialize or whether it would affect his deal with Paramount in any way. However, that is certainly not the case, as his deal with WB is not an exclusive one. Then again, a report done by Puck did suggest that he would only take up Top Gun 3 after concluding the Mission Impossible saga.
It comes as no surprise that a star with the stature of Tom Cruise will be drowning in projects. Various outlets have reported that Cruise might not be available for a project with WB until late 2025 or 2026 due to a tight schedule. When he does get back with them, there are hopes for Edge of Tomorrow 2. There are also rumors that WB is planning an action blockbuster surrounding Tom Cruise.
While there is no information about when Top Gun 3 will be released, Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are available to be enjoyed on Paramount+.
