By now everyone knows that Hong Kong is a battle ground. People are fighting for Hong Kong to remain out of China’s grip. The people who support this are said to be in favor of democracy while those who don’t are said to be in favor of Beijing.

The boycott and protest against the Ip Man 4 movie is because of the pro-Beijing stance of its stars and producers. Hollywood Reporter states that the Ip Man 4 boycott was organized by users of a Reddit-like forum called LIHKG. This site has been one of the sites utilized by people who are fighting for Hong Kong’s democracy from June. The protesters have stated there that they are not seeing Ip Man 4 and are also actively encouraging others to not see it. They are also posting movie spoilers on the internet to deter people from seeing it.

Boycott Because Of  The Pro-Beijing Stance Of The Movie’s Stars And Producer

As stated, this boycott is because star Donnie Yen and Danny Chan as well as producer Raymond Wong are pro-Beijing supporters. Wong has been very open about his pro-China leanings. But Yen and Chan were seen as supporters of Wong’s ideology when Yen appeared alongside Chinese leader Xi Jinping at a 2017 celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong handover and earlier this year also issued a statement about “the determination of the motherland.” Chan has also been very supportive of the Hong Kong police, noting on social media that the police shouldn’t go easy on protesters.

Looks like Yen and Chan aren’t as heroic after all like their movie counterparts. As for whether you want to see Ip Man 4 or not, that’s up to you.
