After months of speculation and anticipation, it seems like Taika Waititi‘s Star Wars movie is dead. In a recent Award Show appearance, Waititi slipped in a humorous yet displeasing tidbit about his upcoming Star Wars movie as the filmmaker recently appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival honoring Shawn Levy who has also been developing a Star Wars movie of his own. The Thor: Love and Thunder director wittily managed to talk about the Deadpool 3 director implying that Shaw Levy might end up with the complete script for his Star Wars movie, unlike Waititi.

However, Waititi’s comments hold a portion of seriousness and shouldn’t be taken completely as a joke. Taika Waititi’s words hinted that the movie is still in the works and developing progress. Before the WGA and SAF-AFTRA strikes began, Waititi told The Hollywood Reporter that there are challenges that affect the story, especially in a well-established franchise like Star Wars. Taika Waititi wants to develop a project that’s never been made before and can stun Star Wars fans.
Taika Waititi Faces Early Criticism Over New Movie
Taika Waititi has found himself in hot water as criticism surrounds him for the new movie Next Goal Wins in which Waititi co-wrote the screenplay alongside English writer Iain Morris. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a footballing comedy that focuses on a football coach of the American Samona National team known for its poor performance. The movie features Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender as Thomas Rongen, and the story revolves around the coach. The JoJo Rabbit director, per Independent, is facing backlash for handling a transgender character in the movie.
Next Goal Wins also showcases the first transgender footballer Jaiyah Saelua to compete in the World Cup game. Kaimana a non-binary actor portrays this transgender character. Even though the character is praised by viewers, there’s criticism going on about how the storyline of Jaiyah Saelua is managed in the movie. Critics have noted that the movie lacks sensitivity toward transgender-related topics and how the movie deals with problems like hormones and related health conditions in transgenders. However, Waititi is tight-lipped and hasn’t spoken about this matter since the movie premiered.
