In Monster’s Ball, Berry and Thornton had an intimate scene. The scene sparked a lot of discussion when the movie first came out. Berry might have objected to the shot since it was so vivid and visceral on purpose, which worried the film’s director. However, the scene finally happened, and Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband was blown by it.

Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton made headlines in early 2000 after they announced their marriage. During the time, Thornton was shooting a film with Halle Berry titled Monster’s Ball. The actor played Hank, a racist white man who gets smitten with Leticia, a black woman played by Berry, after meeting her.

The duo shared an intimate scene in the film, and that generated a lot of conversation as the actress had a few conditions for the role. ”I would only do it if Billy Bob agreed to be as naked as I was,” Berry said. The scene finally took place, and Jolie’s ex-husband was blown away after the love scene.

Thornton revealed that Berry and he worked together very closely to create their intimate scene. He revisited some of the takes that were not scripted. The actor said,

“I might’ve been a little bit nervous beforehand, but once we got into it, it was essentially ad-libbed. I mean, there was some dialogue for that scene in the script, but we kind of just winged it. We had to hold each other’s hands through it a little bit.”

The Bad Santa star took the opportunity to refute a rumor that he was truly intimate with Berry in the movie but claimed that there was some fuzziness in the distinction between fact and fiction.

Thornton said,

“It felt so real when we were doing it that [we felt] the heaviness surrounding the circumstances in the story. I think maybe that’s why it comes across so well on screen, because it was two desperate human beings in this moment alone, and we kind of were alone.”

Directed by Marc Forster, Monster’s Ball tells the tale of a black woman and a white man who seek temporary comfort from their suffering in one another. But their suffering and their separation persist.
