James Gunn recently shared his thoughts on the success of X-Men ‘97 , which brings back the classic 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series. While, the co-creator of DC Studios expressed his appreciation for the show’s unique approach, he also explained why he wouldn’t be interested in creating a similar revival for DC’s Justice League Unlimited.

X-Men ’97 is getting a lot of love from fans and critics for its commitment to continuing the story of the original series. It currently has 98% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The reason the show has become a huge hit is largely because of how it sticks to its original style while also bringing something new for today’s viewers. While the animation style has been updated to look more modern, it still kept the original’s charm.

By doing this, X-Men ’97 stands out among other superhero cartoons and creates its own special place in the world of animation. Now, after the success of the series, fans are demanding a revival animated show for Justice League Unlimited as well.

James Gunn responded to a fan’s suggestion on Threads about reviving Justice League Unlimited in a similar way to X-Men ’97. Though the DCU boss praised Beau DeMayo’s animated series for its uniqueness, he stated that he wouldn’t want to copy its approach for Justice League Unlimited. The 57-year-old wrote:

X-Men ‘97 is fun because it’s unique and not desperately trying to follow the trends of everything around it. So I’d rather just keep doing that.”

Gunn understands the interest in bringing back Justice League Unlimited, but he’s concentrating on creating a fresh DC Animated Universe. This new universe starts with Creature Commandos, an animated series premiering on HBO Max later this year.

Creature Commandos will kick off the DC Universe (DCU), introducing viewers to a team of heroic monsters battling for good. It’s also the first animated series to be part of the same story universe as the DC live-action films.

James Gunn’s decision to focus on a new animated universe is a strategic one. By creating a series that is interconnected with the live-action DC films, he will be able to offer fans a more expansive storytelling experience. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce less popular characters to wider audience.
