After James Gunn’s official exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after completing the Guardians of The Galaxy trilogy this year, he has been entirely occupied with his upcoming projects with DC.

Post the release of Guardians of The Galaxy: Vol. 3 in April this year, fans anticipated Gunn to make the fourth instalment to the franchise. But, the filmmaker has no plans to return to Marvel as he and his colleague at DC, Peter Safran, are engaged with their highly anticipated projects at DCU.

Gunn cleared fans’ curiosity regarding his relationship status with current MCU member, Kevin Feige, who also worked with the director in his previous films under the banner.

Feige started his career as an executive producer, Lauren Shuler Donner’s assistant on Volcano (1997) and You’ve Got Mail (1998). Later, he was appointed as the producer at Marvel in 2000 and since then he has been a part of major films like the X-men films, Iron Man (2008), Thor (2011), the Avengers films and also with Gunn in his GoTG trilogy.

A fan asked James Gunn on his social media platform, ‘Threads’ if the director is in support of MCU continuing with the Guardians of The Galaxy franchise without him and asked the filmmaker if he would like to call out a name for the direction of the movie. The fan also asked Gunn to confirm if he and Kevin Freige are “still on good terms.” (Source: James Gunn’s Threads Page)

To the fan’s question, Gunn confirmed that “Kevin and I are on great terms.” The director also added, “Although a few characters aren’t coming back, I’d love for GotG to continue with the current members and I’d trust Kevin to pick the right person for that.”

Though the filmmaker cannot continue working with Marvel because of his prior commitments and busy schedule, he showed his complete support and trust towards the head of the Studios after his experience of teaming up with the producer during his days at MCU.

According to Comicbook, during the trailer launch of GoTG 3 last year at Bazil’s CCXP convention, Kevin made a lenient joke about Gunn’s new position at DC. Back then, the director was not present at the event on which Feige, the president of Marvel Studios said “has some work to do somewhere else.”

He added that he confirmed the release of James’ GoTG spin-odd film for Disney+Hotstar and stated that the filmmaker is “finishing his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.” Adding to that the producer said, “he has some work to do somewhere else, I don’t know where he’s going.”

Of course, the Marvel Studios head knew where James was heading back then, he just avoided revealing the truth at the right time as the focus was on their upcoming Guardians of The Galaxy film.

Gunn joined Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, where he directed Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.1, which was written by him along with Nicole Perlman, who also wrote the story for the 2019 MCU film, Captain Marvel.

He continued working with MCU for the other two installments of his GoTG franchise, but Vol.3 turned out to be his last MCU film as the company fired him for posting controverting content related to the #Metoo campaign in the entertainment industry. Post the event, DC grabbed an opportunity and asked Gunn to direct The Suicide Squad in 2021, after its terrible prequel, Suicide Squad (2016). Later, Marvel invited him back to direct the third installment and a television spin-off film for Disney+Hotstar, Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special.

The director is appointed as the Co-CEO and Co-Chariman of DC Studios, along with Peter Safran.
