James Gunn Fires Shots at Marvel, Vows to Avoid One Mistake in DCU Reboot That Has Made Marvel Movies a Mess
The DCU has been under the scrutiny of fans ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-CEOs. The franchise has given many box office failures over the years, and Gunn is on a mission to right the wrongs. The director has established his name in the superhero film industry and has a particular gift for creating compelling superhero movies.
Before taking over DCU, the filmmaker had been part of the MCU and has helmed various superhero movies, like Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn and Safran have embarked on an ambitious journey to shape the trajectory of the DC Universe over the next decade. Their vision aims to connect stories and characters, crafting an immersive experience. MCU has been long plagued by issues that have annoyed fans. James Gunn is determined to avoid that one mistake made by Marvel in his revised version of DCU.
James Gunn takes a lesson from MCU’s mistakes for his DC Reboot
James Gunn, a well-known filmmaker of superhero films, switched from Marvel to DC in 2022. As co-CEOs, he and Peter Safran have embarked on a journey to inject something new into the DC Universe by integrating diversity and authenticity.
The DC Universe has suffered a lot at the box office with its back-to-back failures. Gunn is on a mission to change that and make the franchise compete enough with MCU. Despite being at the top, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also been plagued by an annoying issue. The MCU has had trouble maintaining its timeline, like the controversial eight years later title card from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Guardians of the Galaxy director took to his Threads and revealed how he is determined to avoid that one mistake made by Marvel. He discussed how he and other executives will maintain the DCU’s timeline. The director mentioned the team responsible for this task. He wrote, “Me and the rest of the team (Chantal and Galen and Jess etc)!”
The CEO also discussed how things are done at Marvel Studios and questioned if the franchise even has a timeline keeper because he hasn’t spoken to any. Gunn said,
“If that’s a position at Marvel I do not know who that person is (I’ve never discussed anything with them). But I guess that’s why I think ‘Vol 3’ is now and everyone keeps saying 2030 or something (I ALREADY thought I was pushing the limits of Grandpa still being alive!)”

Any fictional universe that wants to keep a strong feeling of internal continuity must maintain an accurate chronology. Numerous franchises have failed to maintain that, and James Gunn intends to take such measures in his world-building process for the DCU’s first chapter.

The CEOs held a press conference to unveil the first slate of projects in their new, unified vision. Chapter One of the DCU will be called “Gods and Monsters,” consisting of five movies and five television series that will interconnect between 2025 and 2027.
One of the highly anticipated projects of the revised DCU is Superman: Legacy. After the exit of Henry Cavill, the filmmaker has cast David Corenswet to play Clark Kent/Superman. Rachel Brosnahan will be playing Lois Lane in the upcoming superhero movie.
Superman: Legacy is expected to go on floors in early 2024. The film will be the first project fully made under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran and is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
