James Gunn Seemingly Confirms Gal Gadot Won’t Return for Wonder Woman 3 After One Major Casting Update
The third installment of Gal Gadot starrer Wonder Woman from DCEU was one of the highly awaited movies for the ardent DC and Gal Gadot fans. They were left disappointed when it was reported that the DC Studios would no longer move forward with the sequel.
The newly appointed co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced that they will be bringing the DCEU to an end and creating their own DC Universe starting with the release of Superman: Legacy. Actor David Cornswet is going to play Superman replacing fan favorite Henry Cavill. Now, there has been a new and an interesting cast update from the DC Studios. Let’s find out.
Sean Gunn to replace Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord in James Gunn’s DC Universe
According to Deadline, actor Sean Gunn who appeared in filmmaker and brother James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad will be seen playing villain Maxwell Lord in DC Universe. The character of Maxwell Lord was previously played by actor Pedro Pascal in 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984.
It is however hard to confirm at the moment about Maxwell Lord’s appearance in which DC movie. Deadline however reports that the character will only be referenced in the background of DC Studios’s Superman: Legacy but could appear in future projects of the studios starting with Gods and Monsters.
Maxwell Lord was created by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire and has been appearing in DC Comics since its debut in 1987. Initially depicted as an ally for the Justice League turns out enemy later.
The character becomes super villain with the help of the Olympian Duke of Deception’s Dream Stone. He is a telepathic businessman who manipulates heroes into teaming up for his gain. Unfortunately, there has been no information provided about Maxwell Lord at the moment.
Sean Gunn’s casting reminds the public of the backlash the director got after casting his wife in appeared in the post-credit scenes of Shazam! Fury of Gods as well. The director was quick to defend himself by saying on social media
“The only DC move I’ve ever cast my wife in was The Suicide Squad. I had nothing to do with the casting of any other movie-anything else was shot a year or so ago while I was deep in Vol. 3. But I know some of you are deeply in need of reasons to hate.”

Wonder Woman 3 is NOT in development at James Gunn’s DC Universe
Gal Gadot spoke to ComicBook.com back in August while promoting Heart of Stone and shared that Wonder Woman 3 is happening. She said,
“I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and Peter is that we’re gonna develop Wonder Woman 3 together.”
But later sources via Variety confirmed that the highly awaited project is neither in development nor that James Gunn and Saffran have any plans to develop it. The source noted that the studios are focused on Superman: Legacy and Wonder Woman prequel series for Max titled Paradise Lost.
And now recasting Maxwell Lord with Sean Gunn, seemingly confirms that the DC Studios is moving in a different direction. It’s only a matter of time before DC Studios clears up things by sharing the official cast members of the respective projects.
