John Cena’s Dream to Dethrone Rival Dwayne Johnson Comes Crashing Down as WWE Legend’s Latest Movie Gets Mauled by Critics
American wrestler John Cena has been acting since 2006 and has starred in many great movies over the years. From James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad to a Transformers spin-off prequel, Cena has done it all. His favorite movie genre to act in, however, seems to be the comedy genre as he starred in Trainwreck, Sisters, Daddy’s Home and its sequel.
One of John Cena’s most recent comedy projects is Vacation Friends 2, a sequel to the 2021 buddy comedy movie Vacation Friends. While the latter was a commercial success, the second has unfortunately been a tragic failure. This annihilates Cena’s chances of beating his rival Dwayne Johnson at making hit movies.

John Cena’s Vacation Friends 2 Failed to Be Successful
John Cena‘s Vacation Friends followed the story of two couples that meet during a vacation in Mexico. The sequel Vacation Friends 2 is follow-up to the story which sees the two couples take another vacation to Carribean where obviously, everything goes wrong very quickly.
The movie in which Cena had appeared prior to this one was Teenage Ninja: Mutant Mayhem which has done quite well at the box-office as well as with critics’ ratings. So, Vacation Friends 2 that has received only 24% on Rotten Tomatoes (as of the writing of this article) is a downgrade to Cena’s upward trend in making good movies.
The biggest factor that contributed to the movie getting such a bad Rotten Tomatoes score is that its story is completely unoriginal in addition to its unengaging plot and lack of humor. This movie highlights the highs and lows of Cena’s career in August 2023 that has recorded one movie with 97% Rotten Tomatoes score and another with just 24%.
John Cena has Starred in Worse Movies Than Vacation Friends 2
John Cena has starred in much better movies than Vacation Friends 2. For instance, Transformers spin-off prequel Bumblebee that has a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, the ninth installment of Fast and Furious in which Cena plays the role of Jakob Toretto, the younger brother of the main protagonist Dominic Toretto, and the TV series Peacemaker in which he plays the role of the character of the namesake superhero.

That being said, the WWE champion has starred in movies that have a lower Rotten Tomatoes score than Vacation Friends 2 which has got the lowest in the past 12 years of his acting career. One of these low-rated movies is the action-comedy movie The Reunion that has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 8% sees Cena as a cop on suspension that his sister tries to reunite with to fulfill their dead father’s wish.
Another such movie is 2011’s Fred: The Movie which has a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score in which John Cena stars as the father of a hyperactive teen boy Fred. While these movies have a worse rating than Vacation Friends 2, Cena had been doing much better recently so this is a major setback for him as an actor.
