“His priority was bringing the truth to light”: Johnny Depp Doesn’t Want Ex-Wife Amber Heard’s $1 Million Settlement Money
The bitter divorce between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard finally ended after both parties settled defamation claims against the other. A deal was finally reached between the two sides whereby Amber Heard’s insurance company will pay her ex-husband $1 million in a settlement. However, the Pirates of the Caribbean star reportedly planned not to keep the settlement amount, and he will donate the total money to several charities.
Over the last six years, the couple has been locked in an ugly legal battle on both sides of the Atlantic after Heard claimed that she was the victim of domestic violence during their 15-month marriage. Although both sides revealed many details during the trial, Amber Heard suffered the most, especially financially, as she had to pay over $10M in damages to her ex-husband due to the defamation case trial verdict. On Monday, the Aquaman star posted on Instagram that accepting the settlement was challenging.
Johnny Depp Will Donate Amber Heard’s $1 Million Settlement Money To Charity
Amber Heard announced on her Instagram Monday that she settled her defamation suit with Johnny Depp because she could not pursue another trial and appeal. Depp’s attorneys announced after the settlement that he would donate his $1 million settlement payment to multiple charities.
Following Heard’s announcement that a settlement had been reached in the case, Depp’s attorneys, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vazquez released a statement on Monday. They said,
“We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light.”
They added,
“The jury’s unanimous decision and the resulting judgment in Mr. Depp’s favor against Ms. Heard remain fully in place.”
“The payment of $1M – which Mr. Depp is pledging and will (actually) donate to charities – reinforces Ms. Heard’s acknowledgment of the conclusion of the legal system’s rigorous pursuit for justice.”
It appears that Depp and Heard have ended their appeals claims even though no formal paperwork has been filed in Virginia court dockets. According to reports, Heard’s $1 million settlement will be paid by insurance, not from her own pocket.
Amber Heard Announced The Defamation Case Settlement on Instagram
Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard posted a lengthy Instagram statement wherein she seemed empowered yet devastated that she could no longer pursue the defamation case a third time. As a part of her statement, she wrote,
“For too many years, I have been caged in an arduous and expensive legal process, which has shown itself unable to protect me and my right to free speech.”
“I cannot afford to risk an impossible bill – one that is not just financial, but also psychological, physical, and emotional.”
“Woman shouldn’t have to face abuse or bankruptcy for speaking her truth, but unfortunately, it is not uncommon.”
The defamation case appears to have almost emptied her bank account, and her net worth dropped by millions to only $500,000 as per Celebrity Net Worth. She concluded her statement by saying that her most valuable asset is her voice which remains forever. As a result, she seems to have no choice but to agree to the settlement rather than continue to fight for it.
