The long legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard finally came to an end. The ex-couple has been embroiled in a court dispute on both sides of the Atlantic for the past six years after Heard alleged she experienced domestic abuse during their 15-month marriage. The six-week trial that ended with the court giving a decision in favor of Depp continued till the former couple agreed to settle it up.

During the trial, both sides revealed many details about each other. The Aquaman star lost a great deal and had to pay her ex-husband $10 million as damages. The actress even faced backlash from the media, fans, and the attorney during the course of the trial. The Pirates of the Caribbean star predicted the trial long after marriage the actress.

The celebrity trial that caught everyone’s attention finally came to a settlement by the former couple. Through the course of the battle, both the actor and his ex-wife suffered a lot. They have been humiliated by each other and lost major projects due to their trial.

Johnny Depp, in 2016 wrote a message to his agent regarding his former spouse, saying, “She’s begging for total global humiliation. She’s gonna get it.” His prediction came true in May 2022 when Heard write the Washington Post op-ed, which led to the infamous lawsuit.

A six-week trial followed and after less than three days of deliberation, a jury determined Heard had slandered her ex-husband when she alluded to herself as a victim of domestic abuse in the 2018 article. 

While the 36-year-old star did receive some amount of hate speech during the trial, many people also spoke up in her favor. Constance Grady wrote for Vox stating, “After five years of anticipation: it’s now clear: The long-awaited and much-dreaded backlash to the Me Too movement is here.”

While another observer stated how it is culturally unfair when a woman speaks against powerful men and the court ruling in favor of one of those men. The whole trial stated that the #MeToo movement is not dead but the legal system is.

Amber Heard made an announcement on 20 December through her Instagram about the settlement of her defamation suit with her ex-husband. In the four-slide post on her social media, she expressed making a very difficult decision. After finally closing the case, the actress acknowledged that,

“The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimised when they come forward.”

She also stated she can’t afford another bill since the trial has already emptied her pocket and taken her nearly to bankruptcy. 

The 59-year-old has decided to donate the $1 million received as damages from his former spouse to charity.
