Matthew Perry made insensitive comments about Keanu Reeves in his new memoir which gave rise to a major internet backlash and even made the actor upset. According to recent reports, he issued an apology regarding this matter but it seems like Keanu Reeves is hurt deeply enough already.

He wrote an apology for the insensitive words he penned in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing, recalling finding out about the tragic and sudden deaths of Keanu Reeves’ longtime best friends, River Phoenix, and Chris Farley. He also explained that he is actually a big fan of Keanu Reeves and added, “I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.” Although, the actor has not commented on the situation.

In a section of the memoir, Matthew Perry talked about his friendship with actor River Phoenix, who died in 1993. This first of two sections are referred to Keanu Reeves.  He wrote:

“River was a beautiful man, inside and out — too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down, Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?”

He further added, “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out. Keanu Reeves walks among us.” Sources reported that he referred to this statement a second time when he wrote about the passing of Chris Farley in 1997. The controversial statements made about the actor were also noticed by the public and he instantly cleared up the statements by saying he was not targeting Keanu Reeves.

Mathew Perry explained earlier this year that he had plans to release a memoir that detailed his life and his own struggle with addiction. He Tweeted:

“So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time people heard from me. The highs were high, the lows were low. But I have lived to tell the tale, even though at times it looked like I wouldn’t. And it’s all in here.”

Mathew Perry and Phoenix acted as best friends in the film –A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon and became friends in real life, but the Stand by Me star died of a drug overdose in 1993 at the age of 23. He also discusses his near-death experience in 2018 when his colon burst, his sad dating history with celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, and Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston, as well as his decades-long struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. He was also set to sit down with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer for a detailed interview special airing to talk about his memoir.
