“Let it go”: James Gunn Has Bad News For Joe Manganiello About His DCU Future as Deathstroke
Fans who might be thinking about Joe Manganiello’s return as Deathstroke to James Gunn’s revamped DCU, then let us tell you that there’s barely a possibility for this to happen.
The actor himself shared that the director has advised him to let go of the short-lived role because there are uncertainties surrounding his comeback. Joe Manganiello revealed having a discussion with James Gunn about reprising Deathstroke and even disclosed that there has been a shelved project. However, it couldn’t happen, and currently, Gunn had advised his friend to “Let it go.”
James Gunn Couldn’t Assure Joe Manganiello’s Role as Deathstroke in His DCU: Says Let It Go
James Gunn had miserable news about Joe Manganiello‘s future in his rebooted DCU, as the Guardians of the Galaxy maker asked him to let go of the role. The actor played Deathstroke for a shorter time, with his first brief appearance in Justice League and next in the longer version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, his involvement in the comic world emerged quite brief.
Manganiello was initially considered to play the titular foe in a Batman movie with Ben Affleck, but since fate had something else in mind, the film was shelved. And now that James Gunn has rebooted the entire superhero world, the director has his own visions for the characters.
According to ComicBook, the Magic Mike star had a conversation with James Gunn, and while sharing the details about it, Joe Manganiello said:
“James [Gunn] is my buddy, and James and I had a conversation about it because Jim Lee over at DC Comics wanted me to create a graphic novel series based on the screenplay that I wrote for the Deathstroke origin film…”
The actor explained that there was a plan to make a comic book series from the Deathstroke screenplay they wrote earlier and added:
“but no one could assure me that, if it garnered the attention of directors and producers, that I couldn’t be attached. So I had to let it go. James Gunn was just like, ‘Let it go’.”
This means that Joe Manganiello isn’t returning as Deathstroke anytime soon, and since Gunn is already busy with his DCU debut film, followed by other projects for his revamped Universe, this is the only news for Manganiello’s involvement in the superhero universe.
James Gunn Disappointed Fans After Being Doubtful of Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke
Even though Joe Manganiello might not be playing Deathstroke in future DCU films, the actor will make sure to find other big projects. He’s an incredible actor who fans love, and now that they know about the uncertainty surrounding his involvement in James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s world, fans have expressed disappointment:
That sucks to hear because he was perfect that role.

That's honestly really sad. I have faith in James Gunn for world building, writing, and even casting, but if anything else screws up, the DCU is dead on arrival.

Justice League is available on Netflix.
