“Made me look like a Chinese checkerboard”: Mark Ruffalo Was Humiliated With MCU’s Man-Canceling Suit to Play Hulk in ‘The Avengers’
Mark Ruffalo aka fans’ favorite Bruce Banner/Hulk is well-known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Appearing in varied Marvel movies and shows, the actor revealed the humiliation he faced because of his man-canceling motion capture suit. He even talked about how others would laugh at him seeing his character’s big suit for the superhero character, Hulk.
Even though the portrayal of Hulk earned Ruffalo a lot of praise, it seems he was not comfortable with different aspects of his role. Probably, this is what made him hesitant to take the role and think he was not the right guy.
Mark Ruffalo Felt Humiliated Due to His Suit
Discussing his iconic roles with GQ, MCU actor Mark Ruffalo revealed his hesitation to take the role. However, despite this, he read The Avengers script and joined the MCU. Describing the process of turning into Hulk, the actor said that he has done a lot of motion capture. He added:
“It was so humiliating, and all the actors, whenever I walked on set, would just start laughing at me because they were in their cool superhero costumes and I’m wearing these ridiculous pajamas that made me look like a Chinese checkerboard.”
Mark Ruffalo also said that wearing what he calls the “man-cancelling suit”, which is a really tight leotard suit, makes him look big where he wishes to look small and small where he wishes to look big. He even went on to say that the suit not only made it difficult to act or even move but also made him self-conscious.
It doesn’t matter whether one agrees with Ruffalo’s assessment of his suit or not, it’s quite clear that it wasn’t the most pleasant experience for him. However, he is definitely grateful for his opportunity to get a chance to play the green goliath. And he is proud of the work he has presented in the MCU.
Mark Ruffalo Received Sympathy for His Unpleasant Experience
The Iron Man actor ended up sympathizing with Mark Ruffalo on Avengers: Endgame sets. The Poor Things actor revealed that Robert Downey Jr. praised his dedication. He came up to him and said that he had a lot of compassion for his role as he could see how difficult it truly was for him to stand all day around in the costume.
Despite all his troubles, Ruffalo portrayed the role of Bruce Banner in many Marvel movies. His hard work was rewarded as Avengers: Endgame was one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It overtook Avatar, a James Cameron movie, at the box office.
Ruffalo’s comments were met with a lot of sympathy from his fans. They agreed that his suit wasn’t that flattering. Some even defended Hulk and the suit by saying that it was quite necessary for the physical appearance and to capture the movements of Hulk.
