“Never gonna happen”: Adele on Why Hollywood Won’t Let Her Become EGOT Winner by Giving Her a Tony Award
Every artist dreams of winning the EGOT, but it isn’t easy for everyone to ace everything. However, for English singer-songwriter Adele, it’s just a piece of cake. The singer has been honored with the three grand awards and is just an award away from being claimed as an EGOT winner.
The acronym EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Surprisingly, the 34-year-old singer is in no mood to achieve the title of EGOT winner. During a recent episode of Carpool Karaoke, Adele said that achieving a Tony Award is never going to happen.
Why is Adele not excited to win EGOT status?
The renowned music artist Adele has released many hit songs over the course of her career. Her impeccable talent is always acclaimed by the fans, making her worthy of all the awards she has ever won. The Someone Like You singer has won an Emmy for her Adele: One Night Only special, 16 Grammys, and an Oscar for best original song for Skyfall.
The singer is yet to achieve the Tony Award, which will make her an EGOT winner. However, Adele has no intention of winning the Tony Award. During a Carpool Karaoke segment with James Corden, the singer explained why she isn’t interested in winning the award. During the discussion, Corden said,
“When we did the last Carpool, you were an Oscar winner, you were obviously a Grammy winner, you subsequently won an Emmy for your TV special. Which means you are one Tony award away from EGOT. You now have the EGO.”
To this, Adele said,
“I really don’t think that that is ever gonna happen. I would never write a musical or anything like that because I f**king hate musicals. I f**king hate musicals. I don’t think I’ve ever said how much I f**king hate musicals.”
Adele continued further by emphasizing that she ‘absolutely’ respects the art form, but EGOT status is not what she is seeking. The Love In The Dark singer said,
“I just don’t need to hear everything in f**ing song all the time. I also think the EGO suits me better.”
Though she respects musicals, they aren’t her genre. Hence, Adele does not see herself winning the Tony Award and winning EGOT status.
Celebrities who are a part of the EGOT club
Winning EGOT is absolutely an honor, as it’s indeed not so easy. Until now, only 18 people have earned Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards.
Viola Davis is the most recent star to join the EGOT club. Apart from him, there are 17 other members of the EGOT Club. American composer Richard Rodgers won the EGOT Awards in 1962. Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, and Jonathan Tunick completed their EGOT in 1977.
John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Scott Rudin, Robert Lopez, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, John Legend, Alan Menken, and Jennifer Hudson are the celebrities who won the EGOT award.
