Expanding franchises by creating spinoffs has seen considerable attention recently, and this is why Netflix has planned spin-offs for both Wednesday and Peaky Blinders. However, fans don’t think it’s a good idea.

Netflix’s Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega in the leading role and Peaky Blinders featuring A-lister Cillian Murphy are the streamer’s two most watched and liked shows. Soon after their release, it gained popularity and remained in the top 10 list for quite a long time. However, the spinoffs didn’t sound good to fans as they believed that not every franchise needed to be converted into a universe.

Netflix Plans For Wednesday and Peaky Blinders Spinoffs: Fans Barely Excited

Netflix has planned spinoffs for Cillian Murphy‘s mega-hit Peaky Blinders and Jenna Ortega‘s Wednesday, which will focus on Uncle Fester and revolve around his story. Peaky Blinders will have two spinoffs, the first one to be set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, and the second will focus on the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan: Polly.

This might sound good to some, but not the hardcore fans, as they didn’t want their favorite series to follow the trend of becoming a franchise and creating spin-offs. According to a post shared by Discussing Film on X (earlier Twitter), they wrote:

The major concern of fans includes Netflix not focusing on the main characters whom the audience wants to see. Wednesday season 2 has been renewed and will soon start production. However, fans aren’t excited about the spinoffs of both, as the idea failed to excite them.

Why Spin-Offs Are Getting Popular Lately

Spin-offs have recently gained widespread popularity, and most of them are made after the triumphant success of a series or a film. This is undeniably a major shift in the entertainment industry. After years of Netflix’s dominance, other streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, Disney+, and HBO Max have also stepped in to follow this emerging trend. However, spin-offs can be successful, but that success isn’t promised, especially when the viewers have expressed no interest in watching them.

According to the dissatisfaction fans have expressed after the news of Wednesday and Peaky Blinders‘ spin-offs broke, the makers might or might not consider their interest. However, the emerging trend of making numerous spin-offs of major hit projects doesn’t seem to be slowing down lately.
