With the burgeoning news of the DCU reboot by James Gunn, it seems like Marvel will have to shift gears and adopt a newer approach to their recent phase of movies. After Jonathan Majors was found guilty, he was removed from every upcoming project by Marvel. Considering the entire upcoming phase was based around Kang and his variants, it’ll be difficult for Marvel to find a newer direction for their movies.

Will Marvel Make R-rated Movies Like Suicide Squad?

Recently, there were rumors that Marvel will try to make more R-rated movies to experiment with the format and see how the audience reacts. A PG rating seems to limit Marvel Studios, which wants to try newer genres in its quest to achieve quality over quantity. In situations where a story demands a mature approach, the studio is hoping to grant the same.

We might see this delimited approach in both series and movies. Marvel is rolling out Echo to try out a mature theme for Disney+, whereas Deadpool 3 is already coming out with an R-rating for the big screens. The upcoming projects by Marvel will find a definite direction after they gauge viewers’ responses on Echo and Deadpool 3. However, the most recent speculation that Thunderbolts will be R-rated has been squashed by reputed source Can We Get Some Toast on X.

While fans believed Thunderbolts would be similar to Suicide Squad, showing a gang of misfits and anti-heroes who might commit crimes. The user on X confirmed that this will not be the case. The story will be more similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, where the band comes together in a familial manner.

How Will Marvel Proceed With New Stories?

A rating clarification helps fans moderate their expectations in terms of the storyline and violence that will be shown. Thunderbolts with Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan will release in December 2024 if there are no more hiccups along the road. A good ensemble movie with such misfit superheroes is a route familiar to Marvel as they have done such movies before, so we hope we get to see an interesting take on such a story arc.

On the other hand, Marvel is trying to change directions to give more creative freedom to filmmakers and the production crew. This will help them make movies a little away from the overarching MCU and make films that delight fans for their individual stories and heroes. Such a change might come into effect after the Multiverse saga because this phase requires multiple heroes to come together against one common foe.
