One Bold-faced Lie Landed Sofia Vergara Her Life-changing Role Years Before Modern Family Made Her an Icon
Colombian-American actress Sofia Vergara rose to fame as the bold and glamorous Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the hit sitcom Modern Family for eleven years. It was not until recent years that the actress branched out to a role that was a stark contrast to what she had done for so long.
In a recent interview, Vergara revealed that she once lied on her CV. As shocking as this revelation is, she is not the first actor to have done so and probably won’t be the last. Numerous other actors have admitted to lying to get a job, but the lie Vergara used was not for a job. It was so that she could get more opportunities.
Sofia Vergara Revealed That She Lied About A Set of Skills on Her CV
Sofia Vergara achieved global fame as Gloria in Modern Family, which was her breakout role. However, she had been in the industry for years before she landed the role. In 2009, she appeared as Matron Mama Morton in the Broadway musical Chicago for six weeks, and it was a lie on her CV that got her the role.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s popular and exclusive actress roundtable was held recently. The panel comprised Oscar-winning actresses like Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, and Brie Larson, and other critically acclaimed actresses, including Jennifer Aniston, Anna Sawai, Naomi Watts, and Sofia Vergara.
When asked if they had ever lied for a job, the actresses did not hesitate to admit their lies. The one story that stood out was that of Vergara as her lie backfired on her.
I didn’t lie to get a job, but I lied to my agents so they’d take me when I moved to L.A. I said I could sing and dance. Why not? I didn’t think they were going to send me out. Then they sent me to an audition for Chicago on Broadway… But I got the part.
A shocked Aniston asked her what happened next. Vergara stated that she played the role of Mama Morton in the musical. Foster seemed to be impressed as she remarked that lying pays off.
Sofia Vergara on Why She Took Up the Role of Griselda Blanco
During the years that she graced the TV screens as Gloria, Vergara also appeared in movies like The Three Stooges, Machete Kills, and Hot Pursuit. Even so, she could not escape the shadow of the ABC sitcom. However, that changed when she took up the role of the Colombian drug lord in the biographical Netflix miniseries Griselda.
In the interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained her reasoning for choosing to play the character and it was not because she wanted to get rid of the character that earned her so much praise and acclaim.
It was I know that character. I lived in Colombia in that era. My brother was a drug dealer and got killed. But I’ve never seen it as a woman – I knew it as many, many men.
According to PEOPLE, Vergara’s brother was murdered in 1998 in Bogotá. Following the tragedy, she moved with her family to Miami, Florida where she achieved stardom as the host of a Spanish-language game show.
After all that she has been through, it is truly commendable how far she has come in the industry, and that she chose to play a role that was far more difficult than she had ever done in her career, just because she believed that the story needs to be told.
