Queen Elizabeth II reportedly avoided her husband Prince Philip for weeks at one point in their relationship. As per the book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, the problems in their relationship began in 2017 when the Duke of Edinburgh retired. However, the author of the upcoming biography, Gyles Brandreth, also pointed out that the married couple kept in contact during that time by speaking “regularly” on the phone. The two drifted apart but they grew closer again during the pandemic. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh died on 9th April 2021 while Queen Elizabeth II died on 8th September 2022. They got married in 1947.

Prince Philip did not want “to be fussed over

As per the book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, the problems in Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage began when the Duke of Edinburgh retired in 2017. According to the author, Gyles Brandreth, Prince Philip did not want “to be fussed over” and wished to “see out his days in his own way.

The Duke of Edinburgh died in 2021

On 9th April 2021, the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip passed away at Windsor Castle, just five years after his retirement. Queen Elizabeth II had been determined to be by Prince Philip’s side when he passed away. As per the book, Queen Elizabeth went through “intense personal grief” following the death of her husband, but she felt it was her “Christian duty” to carry on as best she could. She fulfilled her duties until the end.

On 8th September 2022, Queen Elizabeth’s four children, along with other royal family members, traveled to Balmoral Castle in Scotland amid doctors’ “concerns” for her health. Shortly after, Buckingham Palace announced in an official statement that Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96. The statement said, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.” Her last public appearance was at the finale of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

The two grew closer during the pandemic

Their relationship was not good until 2020 when Covid-19 halted the world. Amid the pandemic, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip reportedly spent more time together in Scotland and at Windsor Castle. During that period, the two grew closer to each other once again. The two got married in 1947 and shared four kids, King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
