In an interview in 2021, she said:
“I’ve always been conscious that my surname is an inconvenience. I would be in floods of tears. That anxiety of someone trying to say my last name as a 5-year-old was the most excruciating thing.”
The Rina Sawayama now knows better than dropping off her surname. Over the years, with each new song inspired by each negative remark about her race, her queerness, or the way she showcases her personal struggles in her music, Sawayama has grown into a pop artist that cannot be held back by any conventions.

In an interview in July 2020, Sawayama called the BRITs and Mercury Prize’s eligibility norms artistic “border control” as she had not been nominated for her album Sawayama for either of those awards because she was an immigrant despite having lived there for 25 years. The next day, Twitter netizens launched a movement that demanded Rina be nominated for those awards. Legendary singer Elton John also posted on Instagram in support of the singer.
Rina Sawayama Owes Most of Her Net Worth to the Music Industry
The STFU! singer launched the album Sawayama in 2020 after signing with Dirty Hit Records. The album received worldwide critical acclaim. She released her second album Hold The Girl in 2022.
