The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is a prequel animated movie that gives fans a glimpse into the past where we are introduced to Vesemir, the mentor who trained and helped Geralt become who he is today. The parallels between the two characters existed, but at the same time, they were so far apart that one could feel they don’t belong in the same world. The creative freedom enjoyed by Beau DeMayo on this project helped propel it to greater heights.

Talking about the differences that set Geralt and Vesemir apart, DeMayo elaborated on how he came to craft such a unique character that went on to delight fans immensely. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich gave him full freedom to explore the storylines he deemed interesting and intriguing enough. In an interview with ScreenRant, he explained,

“One of my favorite movies growing up was Zorro, The Gay Blade. That flamboyant, devil-may-care attitude was an invention of my own. And I don’t know why or how I got there, but I wanted to take a character like that and shove him into the harsh dark fantasy of the continent. It’s a cruel world, and it’s not a glamorous job. But we know what the Geralt of that world looks like; we know how he navigates that world: he talks to his horse, and he’s very angry about it.”

Who knew a movie from 1981 directed by Peter Medak would go on to inspire a modern series set in a completely different world? DeMayo recalls presenting many ideas to Hissrich before finally agreeing on the story of Vesemir that lets viewers understand the intricacies of the world of monster hunters. The depth of their emotions takes center stage beyond just action and thrill that they routinely experience. DeMayo thrived in the creative liberty and crafted a character that transcended the confines of ordinary stories.
