The Oscar season is right here, and while we’re still reeling over all the drama that loomed a few days back at the Awards, we doubt that they can top these scandals that have already taken place on the big stage during the ceremony.
We bring to you a few scandals from the history of Academy Awards – from Angelina Jolie kissing her own brother on the red carpet to a horrible Rob Lowe performance of “Proud Mary”, this list is set to ‘rock’ you:
Angelina Jolie kissing her brother
Angelina Jolie shocked everyone at Oscars when she kissed her brother
Let us take you back to 2000 when Angelina Jolie had revealed to everyone that she was “so much in love” with her own brother during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress before she kissed him on the lips at an afterparty.
After winning the award for Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted, Angelina Jolie and James Haven shocked one and all with a red carpet kiss at a Vanity Fair afterparty.
During her acceptance speech, Jolie gave Haven a shoutout, saying, “I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now. He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, thank you for that.” The duo followed up the speech with a red carpet smooch at the Vanity Fair afterparty.
The kiss sparked some headlines, which Jolie labeled as pathetic. She later revealed that the siblings had been visiting their mother who had cancer. “My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
John Travolta flubs Idina Menzel’s name, calling her “Adele Dazeem.”
John Travolta got Idina Menzel’s name wrong
After the Frozen-mania, Idina Menzel was almost present everywhere. The song “Let It Go” was nominated for Best Original Song, which also meant that Menzel, who had voiced Princess Elsa in the movie, would be performing at the show.
Enter John Travolta, a movie musical legend, hitting the stage to announce Menzel to the world, he went on to inexplicably introduce her as the “the wickedly talented, one and only Adele Dazeem.”
Later Travolta said that merely seconds before Travolta was going onstage, he ran into Goldie Hawn, missing the announcement that the producers had decided to change Menzel’s name spelling on the teleprompter to a phonetic version that was easier to pronounce.
Rob Lowe and Snow White performed a cringy duet of “Proud Mary.”
Rob Lowe later admitted he knew the performance wasn’t a good move
The 1989 Oscars was a year of too many firsts: the Awards were the first time the red carpet was hosted, and it was also the first time when the infamous “And the Oscar goes to…” was said before every award, and 1989 also marked the first time the Awards show didn’t have a host.
Instead of the usual monologue, viewers had to sit through one of the weirdest opening numbers ever: Fans saw Rob Lowe and Snow White performing on Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” for 11-minutes with the lyrics tweaked to fit the Award’s theme.
This performance was not only really cringeworthy, but it was also illegal and soon, Disney filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Academy for the use of Snow White’s image without their permission.
Adrien Brody unexpectedly kissed Halle Berry
The incident happened at Oscars 2003
Halle Berry was selected to give away the Best Actor award at the 2003 Oscars. The award went to Adrien Brody for his portrayal in The Pianist.
When Brody came to the stage after his win, he went on to embrace Halle Berry, pulling her in for a long and passionate kiss. After the kiss got over, Berry was in absolute disbelief while the viewers laughed awkwardly.
During a 2017 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Berry revealed to Andy Cohen that the kiss was totally unplanned and she was far from a willing participant during that moment. “I was too focused on ‘What the fuck is going on right now?” she revealed.
South Park creators impersonated famous women on the red carpet
Oscars (2000)
Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who were South Park creators, were nominated for Best Original Song for “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. The two wanted to make a big splash at the show and they decided to show up in costume, with Parker putting on his own spin on the Versace gown worn by Jennifer Lopez in the 2000 Grammys, while Stone wore a pink dress that resembled the Ralph Lauren dress that was worn by Gwyneth Paltrow to the 1999 Oscars.
“Some people were stoked when we showed up at the Oscars in those dresses, Michael Caine being one. But I remember Gloria Estefan was super-pissed,” Stone told The Hollywood Reporter. The pair later revealed that they had consumed LSD right before the show.
