Eddie Murphy’s Iconic Portrayal as Buckwheat

His portrayal as Buckwheat, which he played from 1980 to 1984, was one of Murphy’s biggest career boosters, but prior to joining the cast of Saturday Night Live, the actor also played Reggie Hammond in the 1982 hit film 48 Hrs.
Fans were drawn to his presence on Saturday Night Live because he has written and performed in numerous sketches, particularly for his performance as Buckwheat was something which fans always loved to watch.
Just to refresh the memory of a few readers, Buckwheat was one of the characters to make his debut in the short film Our Gang/The Little Rascals.
Two famous actors took on the roles of Buckwheat: William Thomas Jr. played the character as a youngster, and Murphy played an adult version of the character.
Eddie Murphy’s Return as Buckwheat After 35 Years Leaves Fans Confused
The Nutty Professor star wanted to walk away from his character part of the show, and he even decided that we would let his character, Buckwheat, die on the show, despite his character having achieved enormous success.
Throughout the years, Murphy hasn’t always been particularly kind about his time while working for SNL. In a Rolling Stone interview, he said:
“They were sh*tty to me on ‘Saturday Night Live’ a couple of times after I’d left the show. They said some sh*tty things.”
Even though the celebrity didn’t really talk to his fans about how he felt playing his role, after the 2002 publication of Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, details regarding the character were made public. The book had a fascinating part on The Church Star’s opinions of buckwheat.
Murphy created a new sketch titled as “The Assassination of Buckwhether” while he was a writer for Saturday Night Live that was entirely devoted to the character’s death.
Murphy kept reprising his part, which made him feel restricted and affected his creativity in general. It took him about 35 years after leaving Saturday Night Live to return and be popular for the show, and guess what? He didn’t like his character, but he still wanted to come back as everyone’s favorite Buckwheat.
