According to multiple reports online, Smith and Sheree split the following year, and the actor made a call to Pinkett and asked if she was seeing anybody. When she said no, he replied, “Cool! After dating for a few years, the couple decided to tie the knot in an intimate ceremony in 1997 on New Year’s Eve. But because his wife was not okay with the idea of getting married later, she changed her mind. Jada Pinkett Smith was pregnant with Smith’s first child, Jaden, at the time. The Red Table Talk co-host revealed to People in 2019 that she never wanted to be married, as she is so old school, but her husband wanted a family, so she agreed to it and they made their whirlwind romance official.

In 2013, the couple again faces backlash due to Pinkett Smith’s comments about their relationship. She once said in an interview that her husband can do whatever he wants, which had everyone thinking that the couple were sharing an open marriage. In response, Pinkett took to Facebook and shut down the rumors by writing,

” Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I both can do whatever we want because we trust each other to do so. This does not mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a grown one.”
