Todd McFarlane Gives Spawn 2024 Movie Update
The world of movies based on comic books is massive. With Marvel, DC, and The Boys franchise all spawning from comics, the fanbase for such content has increased manifold. The latest project that has gotten people excited is the Spawn movie based on Todd McFarlane’s character in a comic. The story follows a US Marine agent who is murdered and then resurrected as the leader of Hell’s army.
When Will Spawn Release?
After numerous delays and hiccups along the way in making the eagerly awaited Spawn movie, Todd McFarlane has finally addressed the elephant in the room. While speaking to the Comic Book website yesterday, he claimed that he is done waiting and will take up the project himself if Hollywood does not produce the movie soon. Blumhouse Productions seems to be attached to the project with Jason Blum particularly interested in making the movie. However, the delays are piling up, and McFarlane is getting agitated.
“2024 is gonna be my make or break anyways, right? Either I’m gonna give Hollywood the best chance to do it and, if not, I’ve got plenty of outside investors waiting. So I’m trying to see if we can make the right deal within the norm of the Hollywood structure. If not, there have been plenty of examples, actually, a couple big ones last year, where people went outside the normal channels and succeeded. And people have done this before with independent movies: you make your movie and you just find a distributor. That one, I could do in a heartbeat.”

Knowing the uniqueness of his character and story, McFarlane is confident he can find independent investors to make the movie. However, he does understand how easy it will be to market and gain traction in the movie with a reputed production company. Blumhouse is well known in this respect and also aligns with the genre of McFarlane’s Spawn.
“Fingers crossed, I’m gonna give as much of an effort to those that live within the confines of it. Obviously, Jason Blum is one of the better ones at getting things done. They tell me I get to read the script this month, so the email’s going out this week to remind them that they promised me that.”
McFarlane is fired up to make his movie happen and excite his fans in time. His enthusiasm and trust in the movie are heartening to see in an industry that only cares about profits and revenue. Nonetheless, we might be able to see Spawn in the theatres only by 2025, provided the scripting and initial production process is still underway.

When Did the First Spawn Release?
Though the comic came out in 1992, McFarlane was very careful about selling the movie rights to a production house. He demanded creative freedom and to have his opinions incorporated into the movie. After a deal with Columbia Pictures fell through, he sold the rights to the movie to New Line Cinema for a minimal $1 to retain creative input and merchandising rights.
Spawn was released in 1997 with a PG-13 rating despite being a bit darker than regular superhero movies. The titular hero was played by Michael Jai White, who was one of the first African American actors to play the role of a superhero. The movie did not go as well as McFarlane hoped as it did not reach the right audiences. With a more experimental undertone in movies currently, we hope the movie aligns with fans’ expectations and does well at the box office.
