Fans have waited with bated breath for decades to witness the megastar soar through the clouds and with the huge commercial and critical success of Top Gun: Maverick the wait finally paid off. From the ensemble cast to Tom Cruise’s superstardom status-everything was perfect, but a key scene was removed from the sequel which could have altered the entire plot of the Tom Cruise-led project.
A Key Scene Was Deleted From Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun: Maverick went on to cross the billion dollar with its blockbuster reception worldwide. The first installment was released in 1986 and marks one of the most important projects of Tom Cruise’s acting career. The action-adventure drama included one of the most heart-wrenching scenes where the character of Goose dies due to the selfishness of Iceman and the lack of anticipation from Maverick. The movie originally had the scene where guilt-laden Maverick visits Goose’s grave at the end.
According to the media outlet ScreenRant’s report, the scene was not included in the sequel as planned. The removal of the scene played a very important role in understanding the different layers of Tom Cruise’s character in Top Gun: Maverick. It has been speculated that the emotional journey of the character from visiting Goose’s grave to experiencing the tension between him and Rooster played a very significant role in striking a chord with the audience after decades. Reportedly, Top Gun: Maverick went on to become a huge blockbuster because Maverick was still tortured by his friend’s death.
