The colorful world of Barbie Land and their even more colorful inhabitants – chiefly Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) – have left fans and critics alike impressed with the anarchic and wild storyline and countless jokes at the expense of men. So much so that Barbie’s opening weekend collection ($162 million) now stands as the biggest among movies directed by a woman.

As such, it might be too greedy and a tad bit unfair to expect more from Gerwig. But that’s exactly how we expect fans to react after coming across the news that the movie’s co-screenwriter failed to include a hilarious scene in the final cut.

Why a Hilarious Scene Was Deleted From Margot Robbie’s Barbie

From a Snyderverse reference that made fun of guys for being too invested in Zack Snyder’s Justice League to laughing at Kensplainers’ obsession with explaining Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Greta Gerwig boldly included plenty of risky lines (some might go as far as using the word ‘offensive’) to the point she wasn’t even sure if Warner Bros. or Mattel would let her make the movie that ultimately cost $145M by the time it was ready for the big screen.

Thankfully, decision-makers with deep pockets went for it and are now reaping the rewards at the box office. But it has come to light that a “fart opera” scene was scrapped from the movie due to the lack of consensus.

“We’ve always tried to get in a proper fart joke and we’ve never done it. We had like a fart opera in the middle [of Barbie]. I thought it was really funny, and that was not the consensus,”

The editor of the movie, Nick Houy, who also worked alongside Barbie’s director in Little Women, explained the idea was bereft of significant narrative moments and more importantly the placement wasn’t right. Shame we were robbed of seeing the likes of Margot Robbie and The Notebook star try their hands at fart jokes!

Greta Gerwig Refused to Cut a Crucial Scene From Margot Robbie Starrer

While the 39-year-old filmmaker accepted the opinion of the majority when it came to the fart opera, she stood her ground to ensure an important scene – described as the “heart of the movie” – remained in the movie.

At one point, Barbie is shown meeting an elderly woman – the character played by Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth – sitting on a bench and telling her she’s beautiful.

She told Rolling Stone: “It’s a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way — it doesn’t lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, ‘Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.’ And I said, ‘If I cut the scene, I don’t know what this movie is about.’”

The moment doesn’t influence the plot of the movie in any way, but Gerwig believes the sweet and humble exchange amplified Barbie’s personality (developed in a Utopian world) and shed light on her own perception of the real world.
