“What is happening to my reality?”: Ayo Edebiri Had a Difficult Time Adjusting To Her Success After ‘The Bear’
Ayo Edebiri kickstarted her career nearly a decade ago with a role in an episode in the series Defectives. Before making her film debut in 2020 with an uncredited role in the comedy-drama Shithouse, she performed a stand-up set on Comedy Central’s Up Next and her digital series Ayo and Rachel are Single, which she co-wrote and co-starred with her fellow comedian Rachel Sennott.
In the two years leading up to her breakthrough role on the FX on Hulu comedy-drama The Bear, Ayo Edebiri worked as a writer and actress on several shows. Her rise to fame has been subsequent, but it has not been entirely easy for her.

Ayo Edebiri on How the Success of The Bear Affected Her
The Bear sees an award-winning chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto leave behind his glamorous job in a Michelin-star restaurant to return to his home in Chicago to run his family’s Italian beef sandwich shop after the unfortunate demise of his older brother. Carmen has to balance his dead brother’s unresolved debts and the rundown restaurant with his own trauma and pain.
Two seasons of The Bear have been released so far and in November 2023, a third was green-lit which does not come as much of a surprise considering how critically and commercially successful the show has been. This success has also put the spotlight on the actors who have starred in the show. Ayo Edebiri is one of them.
In an interview for Interview Magazine, when Daniel Kwan, co-director of Everything Everywhere All at Once, asked how long has she been a part of the promotional campaign, Ayo Edebiri said:
“We started as soon as The Bear first came out last year. I was like, “Wait, I’m in New York doing Kelly Ripa. What is happening to my reality right now?” It just picked up from there, because then the award shows started, which is when we met.”
Kwan and Edebiri have met before because of the nature of their job which requires them to show up at award ceremonies, and other such events. That being said, the fame game is new to both of these people and they are taking it in stride.
Ayo Edebiri on How Fame Works
The Bear has won three Golden Globe Awards and six Primetime Emmy Awards. Winning the award for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series also launched an online conflict regarding the show’s status as a comedy.

Ayo Edebiri, who won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, has her own idea of how fame works. She told Daniel Kwan:
“Well, the way that fame works is that you become the object that people want to digest, and are rewarded for being a celebrity who’s like, “These are my causes and this is what I do.” I don’t know why.”
The fact that Edebiri has been in the industry for a long time now, not only as an actress but also as a writer, has enabled her to build an understanding of how everything works. That being said, she is one of the rising stars in Hollywood and by the looks of it, is not going to stop anytime soon.
