Greta Gerwig the director of the recent blockbuster movie Barbie, in a surprising revelation, shares her inspiration behind the characters of Ken in the movie. While talking about her journey of directing Barbie, with SmartLess podcast, Gerwig shared that Ryan Gosling, The Notebook star was himself one of the biggest inspirations behind the character of Ken.
Greta Gerwig’s inspiration behind Barbie’s Ken was none other than Ryan Gosling
During her conversation at the SmartLess podcast, Great Gerwig shared how Ryan Gosling played a very important role behind the entire character of Ken. She recalled that while she was discussing the character of Ken with Gosling in the early days of production, he compared the iconic doll to contestants on The Bachelorette.
“When the woman isn’t around. They don’t know what to do with themselves. They’re doing, like, push-ups and they kind of are competitive with each other and if one guy wears glasses and then another guy wears glasses he’s like, no you took my thing, I’m the guy with glasses,’” Gosling is said to have told the film’s director.
Greta Gerwig said that when Gosling compared the character of Ken, she had no idea what he was talking about because she hasn’t seen The Bachelor franchise. Despite this, she went ahead to write the character of Ken keeping in mind Gosling. Ryan Gosling’s explanation of Ken was enough for Greta Gerwig to consider him right for the role.
Even though Greta Gerwig hasn’t met Ryan Gosling she was very positive about him playing the role of Ken and it was all because she knew he had funny rhythms which perfectly suited the character.
“In writing we cast Ryan. We wrote his name into the script,” Gerwig revealed. “When we handed them the script the studio was like, ‘Oh that’s so wonderful that you know Ryan.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Ryan. I’ve never met Ryan.’”
