Will Smith appeared on Apple TV+’s The Oprah Conversation with Oprah Winfrey where he shared with the host there is a simple reason why they have been able to sustain together until now and choke the life out of each other. He said,
“Me and Jada, to this day, if we start talking, it’s four hours. It’s four hours if we exchange a sentence. It’s the center of why we’ve been able to sustain [our relationship] and why we are still together, not choking the life out of each other—the ability to work through issues. I’ve never met another person that I connect with in conversation more blissfully and productively than Jada.”
During the conversation, Will Smith was asked about the blowout party (Jada Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday celebration) during which they were, according to the reports, separated. Oprah asked Will to explain the situation to the fans because there already was a wedge between the two of them, but the 40th birthday party was the final moment when they realized that he was not going to be in a relationship where he was just trying to make her happy.
The actor said they never actually officially separated but they realized that it was a fantasy illusion that they could make each other happy and they agreed that they would make themselves happy and then present themselves back in the relationship.
Will Smith admits that Jada Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday was his low point
In a conversation on Red Table Talk, the couple discussed the actress’ 40th birthday party and Jada says that she experienced a midlife crisis at the time. She said, “One day our marriage came crashing down. We came to the realization that we had to redefine our relationship.”
Will Smith added;
“Your 40th birthday was my low point. We essentially had to destroy our marriage. We broke up in our marriage and got back together again and had to rebuild with new rules and something way, completely different.”
He clarified that divorce was not in consideration for either of them, which is why they took the time apart and came back together with a new perspective on their dynamics. Jada Pinkett Smith added to the conversation, “It’s a life partnership in the sense that we’ve created a foundation together that we know is for this lifetime.” Will added, “We have devoted ourselves to each other in a spiritual sense. Whatever she needs, she can count on me for the rest of her life.”
Back in 2018, during an appearance on TIDAL’s Rap Radar podcast, Will Smith explained that he and Jada no longer say that they are married, adding that they refer to themselves as life partners where they get into a space where one realizes that they are literally with somebody for the rest of their life. The actor noted that there are no deal breakers, nothing she could do that would ever break their relationship and she has his support till death and it feels good to be in that space.
Jada Pinkett Smith reveals she moved out of their house
The actress who is gearing up for her all-tell memoir’s release appeared on Today via E! News where she revealed that she and the actor have been separated since 2016 and, as a present to herself on her 50th birthday, she moved out of Calabasas, California, where the couple lived and now she lives in a suburban Los Angeles community.
The duo haven’t been legally divorced but separated. She shared with Hoda Kotb, “By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted from trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
The actress also clarified that even though they are living separately, they are not thinking of getting a divorce as she promised herself that there would be no reason for them to get a divorce, noting that they will work through whatever comes their way.
