Xolo Maridueña Puts Dwayne Johnson and Ezra Miller’s DCU Movies to Shame After His DCU Debut With ‘Blue Beetle’
Xolo Maridueña has already set his foot forward in the competition against the long list of pre-existing superheroes in the world of entertainment. DC’s Blue Beetle has already created history with respect to its Latino cast. The 22-year-old actor is the first Latin superhero from the billion-dollar superhero franchise.
Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle revolves around the character of Jamie Reyes, a fresh college grad who ends up experiencing superpowers after being latched by an alien scarab. The movie circles the journey of the protagonist embracing his new identity as Blue Beetle. Along with Xolo Maridueña actors like George Lopez, Damián Alcázar, Becky G, Adriana Barraza, Susan Sarandon, and Raoul Max Trujillo are associated with the superhero project.
Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle Brings Shame To Ezra Miller And Dwayne Johnson
Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle saw its theatrical release on August 18. Looking at the audience reception and packed theatres, it is quite evident that the superhero movie could bring back the good old days for DC. The superhero franchise has been in the media spotlight for a list of reasons from the start of 2023.
The studio saw back-to-back failures at the box office with Zachary Levi’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, and Ezra Miller’s much-hyped movie The Flash. The three projects fell flat both critically and commercially at the box office. The failure of Black Adam even led to the exit of the wrestler-turned-actor from the franchise and The Flash was one of the major flops in the history of Hollywood.
Looking at the great ratings, it is quite evident that Blue Beetle has broken DC’s bad movie trend on the reputed rating platform Rotten Tomatoes. According to the rating platform, Blue Beetle has received a 77% rotten tomato score which talks volumes about its critical appeal and a 91% audience score shows that it has already become an audience favorite within a day of its release.
Comparatively, The Flash could secure only 64%, Black Adam 38%, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods ended at 49%. According to the critics, Blue Beetle has the potential to bring back better days to the house of DC. Amidst the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the release date of the superhero movie was not postponed.
Xolo Maridueña On Working With The Billion Dollar Franchise DC
Standing in the race of well-established superhero franchises is not for the weak-hearted, and the Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña has already proved it. During an interview with the media outlet Variety, the actor spoke about the responsibility of playing the DC superhero. He said-
“Excited is not the first word that comes to my brain. It is nervous excitement, it’s antsiness. It’s the anticipation of knowing that you’re on the brink of something potentially big, but it still feels really intimate because you’re just with the cast and the crew.”
While talking about the previous failed projects of DC and how Blue Beetle can change the course of the franchise, the actor said-
“Yes, of course, I want this to be the biggest movie of all time. And I truly feel like it is a worldwide movie. I think it should be a box office smash, but at the same time, there are box office smashes that aren’t the best [movies], and vice versa. I don’t want to be a prisoner to the numbers.”
Blue Beetle is written and directed by Gareth Dunnet-Alcoce and Ángel Manuel Soto respectively. Made on a budget of $125 million, the DCEU movie has the potential to soar high at the box office.
Blue Beetle is currently running in theaters worldwide.
