“You can’t get out of it”: Ed Sheeran Considered Committing Suicide After Clinical Depression, Went Into Therapy After His Close Friend’s Death
Ed Sheeran is undoubtedly one of the most popular musicians in the world right now. Throughout his career, he has won numerous awards and accolades, including four Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards, and an Ivor Novello Award. He began his career at the of 14 and went on to establish himself as one of the best artists of this generation.
In his latest interview, the musician opened up about battling mental health issues after two of his friends lost their lives. His wife, Cherry Seaborn’s health condition also deteriorated around the same time and the musician felt helpless. Thankfully, he went to therapy and got the help that he was looking for.
Ed Sheeran talked about his mental health
In his latest interview with Rolling Stone, musician Ed Sheeran opened up about dealing with mental health issues over the past few years. Last year, it was revealed that his wife, Cherry Seaborn, was diagnosed with a tumor. The musician talked about the situation,
“There’s nothing you can do about it. You feel so powerless.”
Thankfully, the surgery went well and the pair welcomed their second daughter in May 2022.
The musician’s longtime friend passed away in 2022
Around the same time his wife was diagnosed with a tumor, the musician got the news that his longtime friend and former roommate, Jamal Edwards, died at the age of 31 due to a cocaine-induced cardiac arrhythmia. The musician revealed that he had a conversation with him and twelve later, he lost him. The musician said,
“I’ve always had real lows in my life, but it wasn’t really till last year that I actually addressed it. You’re just singled out for being different at that point. I’ve kind of blocked out a lot of it, but I have a real hang up about that. I think it plays into wanting to be on a stage and have people like you and stuff. I felt like I didn’t want to live anymore. And I have had that throughout my life.… You’re under the waves drowning. You’re just sort of in this thing. And you can’t get out of it.”
Just one month after losing Edwards, the musician also lost Shane Warne, another one of his friends. Thankfully, with his wife’s support, Ed Sheeran went to therapy and got the help that he needed. He has been doing a lot better since last year so it’s safe to say that therapy has helped him.
Ed Sheeran began his career at the age of 14
The musician began recording and producing his own music at the age of 14 and released his first EP, The Orange Room, in 2005. That was the beginning of his career and three years later, he moved to London looking for his big break. In 2010, he released his second EP, Loose Change.
In 2011, he signed with Atlantic Records and released his debut album +, which included hits like Lego House, Drunk, and Give Me Love. He became a well-known name in 2013 after he released his second album, ×, which featured Thinking Out Loud. The song won Grammy Awards.
In 2017, he released his third album, ÷, which included the hit songs Shape of You, Castle on the Hill, and Galway Girl. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. These were some of the notable achievements of the musician and he is expected to break more records in the future.
