Adam Sandler with Sunny Sandler and Sandie SandlerIt’s less common in film industries where real family members play the real character, unless, as in Pursuit of Happiness, we see Will Smith playing dad to his real son, Jaden Smith.  Adam Sandler brings together his whole family in Sammi Cohen’s comedy drama, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s 2005 YA novel.  Featuring his daughter Sunny Sandler in the lead role as Stacy Friedman, who becomes embroiled in middle school ahead of her bat mitzvah.  His daughter Sandie Sandler is her elder sister, Ronnie, and Jackie Sandler appears as the mother of her best friend Lydia (Samantha Lorraine).

Before premiering on Netflix, the director, Sammi Cohen, sat down with Variety to discuss his experience of directing the entire Sandler family and depicting Jewish culture on screen. “Okay, I made a movie for the gays, and I really wanted to make a movie for young Jews.” I’m really interested in these parts of my identity that I want to see more of on screen”. She also added that it felt relevant to bring a teen-themed drama into Jewish culture, something that hasn’t been explored before.

Meanwhile, some have strong judgments regarding Sunny Sandler’s lead role as nepotism. At the same time, other critics disagreed, calling her “a revelation” and sharing that Adam Sandler’s decision was a good one. The movie gets rave reviews all over from various sources, praising the “Jewish coming-of-age story as a fresh and funny delight”.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is a funny teen drama centered around two best friends. Stacy Friedman and Lydia are preparing for their bat mitzvahs (a Jewish ceremony organized when teenage girls hit their adolescence), and consequently, their friendship blows up as they fight over a boy. The story takes place against the backdrop of their upcoming bat mitzvahs, which represent a significant life transition for them.

Sunny and Lorraine deliver a commendable performance, capturing an admirable portrayal of girl friendship and highlighting the real problems and insecurities during the teen years. Adam Sandler and Idina Menzel shine in their roles as parents. In addition, the movie beautifully integrates the cultural significance of Jewish tradition, conveying cultural identity amid adolescence. Sammi Cohen’s direction, paired with outstanding performances from Sunny Sandler and Samantha Lorraine and other supporting acts including Sandie Sandler, results a lovely cinematic experience.
