Ben Mendelsohn Goes on NSFW Rant About Spider-Man Leaving the MCU
Ben Mendelsohn features in the movie Captain Marvel as Skrull Talos. So, it isn’t much of a surprise to see him reprise his role in Spider-Man Far From Home. However, recently, Ben went on to protest when Peter Parker was officially removed from the MCU. He went on to say that the wall-crawler one of Marvel’s “absolute motherf—ing pornstars” and no other Marvel superhero is “as important as Spider-Man.” Phew! Ben does want Spider-Man to be the part of MCU, just like a bunch of us.
Spider-Man’s Removal From MCU
A pact between Disney-owned Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures fell apart earlier in the year. Since Sony holds the movie rights to the character, Spider-Man had an uncertain future. Disney and Sony’s failure to reach a new deal could separate Spider-Man 3 from the MCU. This would lead to the absence of franchise architect and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Lucky for the lot of us that Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Talos Roots for Peter Parker
It turns out fans aren’t the only ones who were upset by Peter Parker’s absence in the MCU. While promoting his new Netflix movie The King, Ben Mendelsohn says, “I think what happens in these things is, most of the time, cooler heads prevail. Sometimes we end up in a situation that feels like it’s going to be the lead up to World War I. But s— man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherf—ing pornstars.”
He goes on about how Spider-Man is an essential character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man. You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor… none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them. Had Spider-Man been pulled from the MCU, “It would have been a disaster.” Well, Talos knows what is precious to all the fans.
The New Deal
Tom Holland’s intervention led to a new deal between Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman. Iger confirms Holland helped in orchestrating the new agreement during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying, “it was clear that he cared so much. And actually, we care about him.”
Bob says, “I felt for him, and it was clear that the fans wanted this to happen. So after I got off the phone with him, I made a couple of phone calls to our team at Disney Studios, and then I decided to call the head of Sony, and I said ‘We have to figure out a way to get this done, for Tom and the fans.”
Disney is co-financing the next Spider-Man, contributing 25% of its budget as part of a deal. This deal guarantees Disney 25% of net gross profit. The new contract also allows Spider-Man to appear in another MCU-set movie that has yet to be revealed.
Spider-Man 3 opens July 16, 2021.
