George Clooney’s “Most daunting” Project isn’t Even a Movie: It’s a Critical Masterpiece Starring Christopher Abbott
Many might wonder about the most intimidating project of a renowned actor and director, George Clooney, and it’s surprisingly not a film.
During an interview, Clooney talked about adapting novels and creating distinct projects. The director revealed that the most formidable project he has ever done is the miniseries Catch-22, which was aired on Hulu. Based on Joseph Heller’s extensive World War II novel, Catch-22 has Clooney as both the director and actor of the project.
George Clooney Reveals His Most Intimidating Project Ever
Catch-22 is a highly acclaimed miniseries adapted from a novel of the same name. This masterpiece includes philosophical monologues, mysteries, and a holistic cast of expendable flyboys. Starring Hollywood’s one of the most impeccable actors, Christopher Abbott, George Clooney, titled Catch-22 as his “most daunting” project. Abbott is best known for securing intense roles, and his role in the miniseries seemed to be crafted only for him.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George Clooney answered numerous questions, including a discussion on his novel adaptations. The director revealed that it’s not easy to craft such projects, and not every viewer might understand the message. Clooney also stated that:
“And blood flows like a river,” your imagination is always much more interesting than what you could do cinematically. Doing Catch-22 was the most daunting of them all, since it’s one of the most beloved books of all time. You just have to accept the idea that you’re never going to quite fit everybody’s bill, but you’re also trying to create your own version of the story.”
In the satirical dark story, Abbott played the role of Yossarian, and the story revolves around the US Army Air Forces bombardier Yossarian, who is quite panicked about flying his combat missions in World War II. Yossarian’s fear is one of the major aspects of his character, which makes it even more intense and aligns with the author’s description.
Christopher Abbott Made Catch-22 More Engaging
Catch-22 received positive reviews from both fans and critics, and Abbott’s talent for perfectly balancing drama and comedy made the miniseries even more engaging. Clooney played the role of parade-obsessed Scheisskopf, who trains Yossarian and Clevinger (Pico Alexander) before deployment. Yossarian believes that the World War would end before his training, while Clooney’s strict General is obsessed with training the two soldiers, who often find themselves in hilarious situations.
What’s even more interesting to note is that Christopher Abbott didn’t read the original book before auditioning for the role. During an interview with Vanity Fair, Clooney and Abbott talked about their project, and the Sanctuary star said:
“The show’s more linear than the book. It has to be because Catch-22 the book . . . I don’t think it’s completely translatable as is.”
George Clooney acknowledged Abbott’s work in his miniseries and praised his talent for balancing the drama and comedy to do justice with Heller’s novel. He said:
”More importantly, he has a unique quality that makes you root for him. That’s not something that can be learned—either you have it or you don’t. And he has it.”
During the auditions for Catch-22, Clooney was in charge, and after witnessing Abbott’s talent, he knew that no one could play Yossarian better than the Possessor star. The actor has landed some notable roles, and his breakthrough was in Lena Dunham’s Girls.
