Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 To Have Multiple MCU Debuts Confirms James Gunn
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will reintroduce Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and his ragged band of misfits for a one-off holiday adventure. Before the film’s release next year, we’ll see the ragtag crew a few times. The Guardians of the Galaxy squad will first appear in Thor: Love and Thunder this summer, and then in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in December.
There isn’t much information on where the Holiday Special will fall into the Marvel timeline, although James Gunn has already stated that it’s a good idea to see it before seeing the third Guardians film, which is likely to wrap up their tale — at least for the time being. It doesn’t take much to pique Marvel fans’ interest in anything related to the MCU, so Gunn’s tweet in October last year asserting that the Guardians Holiday Special would unveil one of “the greatest new Marvel characters” to the franchise sparked a slew of fan theories about who else might be in the Disney+ exclusive.

“More than one great new MCU characters will be introduced” – James Gunn
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the first full-fledged Christmas special under the MCU banner, and Gunn is certain that it will do very well when it debuts on Disney+. Gunn said in an interview that the Guardians Holiday Special will be “unlike anything anyone’s ever seen before.” That may be a strong statement, but it’s hard not to accept it coming from James Gunn.
“The Holiday Special is the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it. And it’s out pretty soon. You know, it’s out this Christmas. It’s not like people have to wait that long.” – James Gunn
Although specific information about the Holiday Special has been limited, Gunn has turned to Twitter to provide a few intriguing facts. Gunn even announced on Friday night that “more than one great new MCU character will be introduced” in the film.

As an Omega-level mutant, the famous Christmas mascot has been formally introduced to the Marvel Comics canon, thus the Guardians Holiday Special might be one of the first instances we see mutants in the MCU. The first two Guardians of the Galaxy films are now available to stream on Disney+, while its Vol. 3 is set to hit the screens on May 5, 2023.
