After over a decade of making music, Miley Cyrus can finally call herself a Grammy winner. Cyrus took home her first golden gramophone trophy on Sunday, earning Best Pop Solo Performance for her massive hit Flowers. Cyrus was stunned when she was called out on stage for receiving the award.

When Mariah Carey announced her name, Cyrus received the award calling it “iconic”. She couldn’t help but chuckle while accepting an award she’d waited so long to receive.

Miley Cyrus Finally Wins Her First Grammy Award

Incredibly, Flowers was just Cyrus’ third-ever Grammy nomination despite her lengthy career. She was first nominated in 2014 for the Best Pop Vocal Album for Bangerz. In 2022, she shared an Album of the Year nomination for Lil Nas X’s Montero.

So her solo win for Flowers was a long time coming. Her smash single, which still charts over a year after its release, spent eight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Miley Cyrus could hardly contain her excitement over her victory. While performing Flowers later in the Grammys ceremony, she ad-libbed a lyric to recognize the achievement.

“I didn’t wanna leave you, but i did,” she sang. “I didn’t wanna fight, but we did. Started to cry, but then remembered I just won my first Grammy.”

The revised line drew cheers and chuckles from the star-studded audience, including Taylor Swift singing along from her seat.

Along with finally earning Grammys gold, Cyrus’ win may have broken a curious curse. Many of her fellow Disney Channel graduates have been nominated but never won a Grammy, including Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Brothers.

By taking home the Best Pop Solo Performance honor, Cyrus paved new ground for Disney stars at the Grammys. She helped prove they can transition from teenage entertainers into legitimate, award-winning musical artists.

Thanks to the massive success of Flowers and her recent album Endless Summer Vacation, Cyrus came into this year’s Grammys with a leading six nominations. That tied her for fourth-most nominations in 2024 with Future and producer Boi-1da.

Along with her big Pop Solo Performance win, Cyrus is also up for more major awards this Sunday night:

  • Record of the Year for Flowers
  • Song of the Year for Flowers
  • Album of the Year for Endless Summer Vacation

After her first Grammy win, could more victories be in store for Miley as the night goes on?

From child actress to adult pop provocateur, Miley Cyrus’ career evolution has seen her break many molds. Perhaps her greatest achievement yet has come by shattering the so-called “Disney curse” that’s plagued many young stars who got their start on the kid-friendly channel.

By winning Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammys for her smash single Flowers, Cyrus became the first Disney alum to ever take home a Grammy for one of their own solo hits. For a performer who’s been putting out music since the late 2000s, it marked a triumph that was a long time coming.

Interestingly, while the likes of Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brothers have racked up nominations at the Grammys, none had managed to secure that elusive victory until Cyrus got the flowers she deserved Sunday night.

Her win for Flowers may pave the way for more Disney stars to be taken seriously as musical artists at future Grammy ceremonies. For all her headline-grabbing antics over the years, Cyrus proved herself to be in a class above the average Disney pop act. She always stood out from the High School Musical crowd and now has the Grammy gold to show for it.
