The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced many fan-favorite characters over the years, including Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk in the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Tatiana Maslany brought the character to life in the show’s first season, but the MCU has been selective about greenlighting the second seasons of its shows. Tatiana Maslany recently dashed hopes for a second season of the Marvel series.
During a live stream, Maslany claimed Disney likely won’t order a Season 2 due to the show’s hefty budget. So far, only Loki has been renewed for Season 2 among Marvel’s Disney+ shows. Fans hoped She-Hulk might follow suit after its first season ended with loose threads. But Maslany said those hoping for She-Hulk Season 2 will likely be disappointed.

According to The Direct, when asked about a possible renewal during a Twitch stream, Tatiana Maslany responded:

“I don’t think so. I think we blew our budget and Disney was like, ‘No thanks.'”

While said jokingly, Maslany seems confident Disney won’t greenlight more episodes. She believes the high production value of Season 1 drained the show’s budget, making Disney hesitant to spend more.

With CGI transformations, superhuman guest stars, and action set pieces, She-Hulk was an ambitious undertaking. Maslany thinks the lavish Season 1 exhausted allocated funds. Her response suggests a prohibitively high price tag for subsequent seasons.

Of course, Maslany didn’t declare this definitively. But her remarks indicate Season 2 hopes should be tempered. Even if she’s partly joking, the show’s extravagance likely impacts renewal odds.

How Else Could She-Hulk Appear in the MCU?

Luckily, She-Hulk can live on even without a sophomore season. As Maslany noted, Jennifer Walters could pop up elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first season included cameos from Hulk allies like Wong and Abomination. Similarly, She-Hulk could visit other heroes’ projects. For instance, her romance with Daredevil leaves the potential for appearances in his series.

As an attorney specializing in superhuman law, Jen could provide legal aid in future Marvel properties. Imagine her reprising her role from No Way Home as Peter Parker’s lawyer.

Why Did She-Hulk Fail to Impress Fans and Critics?

Despite Marvel’s confidence in the series, She-Hulk has been met with lackluster reviews from both fans and critics. Many have criticized the show’s subpar CGI effects, especially in bringing She-Hulk to life on screen. Compared to CGI in other recent Marvel projects, the green She-Hulk form looks noticeably cartoonish and unconvincing. This distracts from the show’s legal comedy plotline.

Additionally, fans feel the humor falls flat throughout the season. The jokes lack sharp comedic timing and wit, failing to land the way a true legal comedy should. She-Hulk breaks the fourth wall, but not in an inventive Deadpool way that enhances the humor. Much of the meta-humor comes across as gimmicky.

While the show experiments with an unusual genre for Marvel, the execution disappoints on both a technical and comedic level. The CGI and writing fail to do justice to a character that could be great if handled properly. She-Hulk doesn’t measure up to the standard of quality that Marvel fans expect from the franchise.

So while She-Hulk’s return is questionable, fans hope Maslany’s character will pop up again in the vast MCU multiverse. For now, viewers can stream the entire first season of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law exclusively on Disney+.
