He also bagged the lead role in the cult classic show Doctor Who. The announcement about Gatwa’s casting was made in May 2022.
The 30-year-old, making his Hollywood debut with Barbie, was certainly excited about his role in the BBC series. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the actor revealed how he ruined his Doctor Who casting by blurting it while drunk.
Gatwa, even before the official announcement, informed former Doctor Who star Matt Smith that he had been selected as the Fifteenth Doctor in a drunk state. Gatwa discussed his experience with Doctor Who and shared that he once had an encounter with a former series star. He met Smith, who plays the Eleventh Doctor, at a party before his formal casting was made public.
Ncuti Gatwa explained he drunkenly revealed his casting to Smith by telling him, “I’m following in your footsteps!“
The statement was confusing for the 40-year-old until the official announcement was made. The actor supported the 30-year-old for being the new doctor in the BBC series.
