Gearing up for his highly anticipated Apple TV series The Crowded Room, Tom Holland opened up about the impact of the show on his mental health. Revealing his real-life tumultuous journey to sobriety, the British actor reflected upon the complexities of his onscreen character. Holland even confessed to finding a striking resonance with his troubled teen onscreen character, Danny Sullivan.

From being the treasure hunter Nathan Drake in Uncharted to infamous web-slinger Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland returned onscreen, after a much-needed break. Sitting with Entertainment Weekly to discuss how his “dreams are coming true”, the 26-year-old opened up about his upcoming highly anticipated Apple TV series The Crowded Room

Inspired by a true story, based on the 1981 novel by Daniel Keyes, The Minds of Billy Milligan, Tom Holland‘s miniseries rotates around the life of Danny Sullivan. Played by the 26-year-old, the main character is a shy, anti-social teen from Upstate New York, arrested after a shooting at the Rockefeller Center in 1979. Holland purposefully describes his series as “an insight into the power of the human mind…the ways in which we can deal with trauma”.

Diving further deeper into the fundamentals of the series, Holland explains, “It’s a show that will take you on twists and turns”. Explaining vividly, the actor shares, “You’ll never know where you are or what’s going on — and then it will all come to a miraculous conclusion toward the end”. Discussing his upcoming project with passion, Holland stated, “It’s a story about heartbreak. It’s a story about love. It’s a story about betrayal. And, most of all, it’s a story about a young kid’s determination to survive”.

Finding a deeper resonance with his character in his upcoming miniseries The Crowded Room, Tom Holland mentioned enjoying his work. “I really enjoyed playing Danny in those earlier episodes where I was able to lean into my more vulnerable side.” the 26-year-old confessed. While the story navigates through the life of Danny Sullivan, it seems the series also took pages from Holland’s life.

Stating “I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing”, Holland mentioned how easy it was for him. However, highlighting the mental journey, the actor stated, “The mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards”. Recalling a specific moment after filming the series, where he failed to detach himself from his onscreen character, Holland mentioned struggling with his emotions. “I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life,” the actor confessed.

Tom Holland who previously struggled with sobriety, was quick to shift to his mental health as he engaged himself with the project. Therefore, struggling with detachment after the shooting, the actor confessed to visiting a psychiatrist to understand “Danny and Billy’s struggles”. He further shared how his sessions were “informative to (his) own life” and the series helped him recognize “triggers” or “things that stress (him) out”. Currently sober for nearly one year and four months, Tom Holland is harboring high hopes for his upcoming series.
