John Stamos Tried to Quit Full House

Fuller House was one of the best sitcoms of the late 80s and early 90s, and John Stamos happened to be one of the most beloved characters of the show. The role he played was of Jesse Katsopolis aka Uncle Jesse. In an episode of former Full House star Dave Coulier’s podcast Fuller House Rewind, creator Jeff Franklin revealed that Stamos almost quit the show to avoid being overshadowed by the children co-stars.

“Jodie [Sweetin] just stole the whole thing,” Franklin said on the first episode of the podcast; then went on to say that she was “knocking jokes out of the park.” Sweetin was only 5 years old when she began acting in the show as the middle child, Stephanie Tanner. Coulier then added:  “And I remember walking out with John and he’s like, ‘The whole show’s gonna be her. We can’t do this.'”

It’s surprising that Stamos felt threatened by kid stars despite being in the industry for a long time at that point. Franklin also added that he didn’t find out about Stamos being very upset about “having to play second fiddle to these really funny kids” and his initial decision to quit the show until much later.

John Stamos had become a fan favorite due to the relationship between Jesse and the kids, especially Michelle Tanner. Following the conversation between Franklin and Coulier, Stamos also commented on the incident in a recent episode of Hot Ones. He said:

“It was pitched to me as a Bosom Buddies… with, you know, a couple of kids in the background. We did a table read of it, and I was the star. I was coming off of General Hospital. We sit down, and we started reading, and Jodie Sweetin, who plays Stephanie, reads her lines, and people are dying laughing. I mean screaming. I was like, ‘What’s happening here?” They couldn’t even hear my lines. They were laughing so hard at her.”‘”

Stamos’ immediate response to watching his child co-stars outshine him at the reading itself was to ring up his agent and ask him to get him (Stamos) out of the show because he didn’t wish to be upstaged by the kids. However, in the end, Stamos did stick around and even began loving the show. Later, he even realized that the show’s star wasn’t a person, it was love that made the show what it was.
