Karen Gillan Wants to Recreate Harley Quinn Series Storyline in James Gunn’s DCU After Revealing Her Desire to Play a Batman Villain
Karen Gillan, who previously worked with James Gunn for Marvel’e Guardians of the Galaxy, has again expressed enthusiasm for playing a prominent Batman villain.
The actress previously revealed that she would love to play Poison Ivy in Gunn’s revamped DCU, and now Gillan has made it even more clear by disclosing which storyline she would prefer. When asked if there’s a specific version of the Batman villain she wants to play, Karen Gillan said a relationship with Harley Quinn would be perfect.
Karen Gillan Expressed Desire To Play Poison Ivy From Harley Quinn Series
With the rebooted DCU, James Gunn is actively working on adding a new ensemble of DC superheroes and villains, which has also excited Nebula actress Karen Gillan to join the universe. The Dual star is experienced in working for a major superhero franchise, so introducing her as one of the most legendary villains in the Batman world might be an easy task for the filmmaker.
Last year, Karen Gillan expressed the desire to work in James Gunn’s DCU and was confident in disclosing which complex character she would love to play. It’s the Batman villain Poison Ivy who has intrigued Gillan to join the superhero world, as she said:
“I always thought that Poison Ivy was really fun. So maybe something like that would be cool.”
The Jumanji star commended Gunn and added, “Working with him has been one of the great joys of my career so far.” Karen Gillan has portrayed Nebula, another major and complex character, which might help her elevate her performance in the DCU.
While speaking to ScreenRant, Gillan expanded her previous comment, sharing that she would prefer to play Poison Ivy in the Harley Quinn series, in which Joker’s girlfriend gets super close to Ivy and they both form a relationship. The actress said:
“Oooh. That’s a good question. In a relationship with Harley Quinn sounds excellent.”
The Harley Quinn animated series in which best friends Ivy and Harley’s relationship goes beyond friendship was released in 2019. The series focuses on Harley being sent back to Arkham Asylum after a failed robbery, and instead of the Joker breaking her out, Ivy becomes the one and starts convincing her best friend that her criminal boyfriend does not love her.
The adult audience well-received the series, exploring the complexity and challenges in Ivy and Harley’s love relationship. The first potential live-action film that can introduce Poison Ivy in the new DCU is The Brave and the Bold. This might also be Karen Gillan’s chance to join Gunn’s universe as she is already enthusiastic about it.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy’s complex union in a live-action DCU film will likely gain more attention, considering how fans praised the 2019 animated series. James Gunn and Peter Saran are all set to introduce some Bat family members that might allow Ivy’s introduction through The Brave and The Bold. However, the Co-CEOs haven’t shared any official statements regarding the casing of Karen Gillan.
